Great to see that African countries are liberating themselves of unfounded European skepticism and move ahead with testing GM crops that could be very useful for smallholder farmers. Virus-resistant cassava in Kenya developed by public sector.

Kenya National Biosafety Authority Approves Genetically Modified Cassava

Kassava eli maniokki oli juuri eräs niistä kasveista, joiden jalostukseen suuret USA:n ja Euroopan firmat eivät koskaan innostuneet.

Tuosta em. vastustuksesta huolimatta Nigeria etenee tässä asiassa:

Ovat tyytyväisiä, kun se näin etenee:

Kenyan small farmers look to genetically engineered disease resistant cassava to improve food security

Nimittäin juuri ne pienviljelijät. Jotka viljelevät maniokkia. Joka on tärkeä vain Afrikassa.

Ludger Wess uudelleentwiittaama Stuart Smythin kommentti:

Quote
More and more African nations are rejecting EU-based eNGO lies about safe, innovative plant breeding methods, like genome editing. It's good to see these countries turning to innovative solutions to improving food security

African Farmers Could Benefit from More Friendly EU Agriculture Policies

Quote
Globalization is making markets better accessible to farmers like Mr. Bor. He says: “Almost all EU countries purchase Kenyan agricultural goods. Who stands to benefit most will depend on what countries like Germany or the Netherlands decide. African farmers must keep a closer eye on European policymakers.”

Loppupuolella juttua tulee sitten esille, missä hän näkee suurimmat mahdollisuudet (lihav. HJ):

Quote
What Africa farmers need are favourable policies and actions in both Europe and Africa, says Mr. Bor. For now, he says that, “Opportunities are all around for small farmers like me, mostly in the organic niche.

Alliance for Science uudelleen twiittasi Elan Buanin twiitin:

The wealthier “haves,” who do not need GM crops because they already have enough food, are preventing the “have nots,” who do need it, from accessing the technology it and improving their food security.

Ugandassa takapakkia:

GM crops: Kenya and Nigeria progress as Uganda falters

Mutta siis oikeastaan hyvinkin vauhdikasta edistystä muualla.

Tätä yhä eräät tahot yrittävät:

Viewpoint: ‘Green neo-colonialism’ — Utopian visions of organic farming promote starvation in Africa

Quote
Across Africa, farmers and governments are struggling to feed growing populations. Ongoing and deadly locusts and Fall Armyworm infestations, cancer-causing mycotoxins, crop diseases and adverse weather all threaten starvation for millions. At the same time, agricultural technologies that can help improve yields, protect the natural environment and feed hungry millions are being undermined by intentionally deceptive anti-technology campaigns. Campaigns funded by rich foundations hyping utopian visions of organic peasant agriculture and European government-funded non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are seeking control of Africa’s food and agriculture.

These well-funded foundations, European government aid programs, and NGOs want to shut down African debates over the future of agricultural technology. Cloaking themselves in the woke environmental and pro-peasant farmer rhetoric of the organic-only agroecology movement, groups like the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (ASFA) and the anti-trade and anti-technology movement La Via Campesina work overtime to keep African farmers from using safe pesticides, fertilizers, hybrid seeds, and genetically modified crops (GMOs) and other advanced agricultural tools. It’s a radical agenda that is the face of a “green” neo-colonialism.

Growing food security challenges in Africa opening regulatory doors, softening opposition to game-changing CRISPR crop editing

Viewpoint: How European ‘precautionary politics’ hobble Kenya’s attempts to embrace biotechnology

Julistus:

Öko-Kolonialismus – Lasst Afrikaner*innen selbst entscheiden!

Löytyy englanniksikin:

Eco-Colonialism – Let Africans decide for themselves!

Kommenttina tuohon Ludger Wess twiittasi eilen:

Quote
Statt Wissenschaftlern schicken deutsche NGOs Scharlatane und Voodoo-Berater. Öko-Kolonialismus - Lasst Afrikaner*innen selbst entscheiden! - Progressive Agrarwende

Tarkoittiko hän voodoo-neuvonantajilla mahdollisesti  näitä?

Perunaruttoa kestävistä geeniteknisistä lajikkeista, läpimurroista siinä on kerrottu sieltä täältä maailmalta. Näin kerrotaan Afrikasta:

Defeating late blight disease of potato in sub-Saharan Africa

Quote
Genetic transformation techniques in the last 30 years provide a more direct transfer mechanism into existing elite varieties lacking resistance to LBD. The 3R potato was developed by the International Potato Center (CIP) by transferring three R genes chosen for their ability to recognise a broad spectrum of strains of P. infestans into farmers’ preferred varieties lacking resistance to LBD.

Confined field trials were conducted by the National Agriculture Research Organisation (NARO) with CIP collaboration in Uganda since 2015 under full regulatory compliance by the National Biosafety Committee (NBC). Up to 15 transgenic events were tested from two varieties at the main potato research institute in Southwestern Uganda. Remarkably, all 3R potato transgenic events grew without being affected by LBD without fungicides whereas the non-transgenic varieties were devastated.[..]

Viewpoint: Part 1 — Opposition stirred by anti-GMO advocacy group propaganda fading in the developing world, as more countries embrace crop biotechnology

Muistakin kuin Afrikan maista hän artikkelissaan kertoo.

Toinen osa Cerierin tarkastelusta:

Viewpoint: Part 2 — Which developing countries are taking the lead in crop biotechnology innovation?

Kirjan esipuheen on kirjoittanut Raj Patel.

Organic vs Industrial Agriculture rematch

Quote
So what would progress look like? Eric Holt-Gimenez, together with Miguel Altieri, Hans Herren and Stephen Gliessman have ideas, and I’m reposting here the fine words you’ll find at Food First.

Food First?

Viewpoint: Public Affairs professor advocates for agroecology systems, claiming technology-centric agricultural programs promoted by Gates Foundation has failed in Africa

Quote
Agroecology applies ecology and social science to the creation and management of sustainable food systems and involves 10 or more interconnected principles, ranging from the maintenance of soil health and biodiversity to the increase of gender and intergenerational equity.
[..]
Under chemical agriculture, farmers grow a single crop. They buy fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and access to water, and if necessary, they rent pollinators to maximize the yield. They use the revenue from selling the harvest to pay their bills and debts.

In agroecology, farmers find ways not to exterminate pests but to reach an ecological equilibrium. They accept a little crop loss while providing habitats for predators and introducing other forms of biological control to obtain a much more robust and resilient ecosystem.
