Etelä-Afrikalla on kokemuksia, joita pitäisi kuunnella:

Viewpoint: With two decades of resounding GMO maize success, South Africa offers lessons on food security for the rest of the continent

Keitä he ovat:

The A – Z of anti-GM activists in Africa

Jo ennestään täällä tuttujakin nimiä. Esille tulevat voimakkaasti eurooppalaiset taustajärjestöt. Ruotsi saa jutussa maininnan:

Quote
As the CEO, he led PELUM to get funded by the Swedish Society for Nature and Conservation (SSNC) to continue its opposition to GM crops and associated technologies.

Afrikan tiedemiehet tietävät, mitä Afrikka tarvitsee:

Nigeria needs biotechnology to weather climate change impacts on farming, say West African scientists

Mutta tietävätkö eräät europarlamentaarikot, vieläkään?

Ensi silmäyksellä tämän miniesseen periaatteet vaikuttavat hyviltä:

Aito kumppanuus tunnustaa paikallisen asiantuntijuuden

Viewpoint: How European activists’ opposition to cutting edge crop technologies undermines global sustainability efforts

Quote
Well-funded non-governmental organizations (NGOs) — both in the EU and the U.S. — regularly pour millions of dollars into lobbying African nations into adopting policies that reject modern agriculture. They call it “agroecology,” focusing on promoting “culturally sensitive” practices that glorify subsistence farming.
[..]
Unfortunately, African farmers don’t have anyone on their side. Even the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization has assisted these NGOs by convincing government officials of these ridiculous and baseless lies. Among the most egregious: that GMOs cause cancer and pesticides make men infertile.

Anti-GMO stances ‘insult smallholder farmers’ in Africa and Asia

Quote
It is unfair to claim Africans are only allowing themselves to be used by the West when it comes to GMOs, said Patricia Nanteza, the Alliance for Science Africa director.

“Farmers are smart,” she said. “Farmers are not stupid. The accusation that people in Asia and Africa are just open to anything from the West must stop. At a certain point, I feel it’s insulting. Also, it’s more insulting to farmers to assume that they don’t understand. Why has biotech come to the (African) continent? To deal with the challenges farmers are facing. That is why the scientists are using technology to deal with the problems farmers are facing.”

"Tyhmän maajussin teoriaan" on täällä jo aiemmin suunnattu huomiota.

Mielenkiintoinen mahdollisuus:

Gene editing can increase yields, improve nutrition, fight climate change — and bring native species back to African agriculture

Quote
In most African countries, colonial powers introduced exotic crops and livestock from their native countries with the aim of improving yields and also to take advantage of certain desirable traits. Many of the local livestock breeds and plant varieties were relegated as inferior.

With gene editing, native species can be enhanced to adapt to changes in local environments. This presents an opportunity to groom local or even exotic crops for the climatic and environmental conditions that apply to specific locales while maintaining optimal production. For instance, Ghana relies on imports of apples to cater to local demand.

Mielipidekirjoituksessa yritetään porautua siihen, mitkä syyt todella ovat tätä kehitystä estämässä:

Viewpoint: What are the barriers limiting Africa from adopting genetically engineered and hybrid-improved seeds?

Kirjoittajat eivät muuten erityisesti tuo esille rikkaan maailman vaikutusta asiaan.

Etelä-Afrikka on tähän asti asiassa kiitettävän ennakkoluuloton.

Viewpoint: How South Africa is bungling regulation of CRISPR and other gene edited crops — and why consumers will pay the price

Quote
South Africa’s authorities have taken what we think is an unfortunate approach to regulating genome-edited plants. In October 2021 the government classified genome-edited plants as genetically modified crops. This is based on its interpretation of the definition of a genetically modified organism in a 25-year-old piece of legislation rather than on recent science-based risk analysis considerations.

As experts in plant biotechnology we fear that this regulatory approach will greatly inhibit the development of improved crops for South African farmers. It will place an unnecessary regulatory burden on bio-innovators. This will discourage local investment for in-house research and development, as well as projects in the public sector. Local entrepreneurs who aim to enhance local crops’ climate resilience or to develop speciality products for niche markets through genome editing will be thwarted by the need to raise disproportionate funding to fulfil current regulations.

Artikkeli kertoo kyllä myös maan menestyksestä geenitekniikan käyttöönotossa. Ja tekee ehdotuksen toisenlaisesta säätelyjärjestelmästä.

Uganda:

Ugandan field trials demonstrate significant economic benefits for farmers growing insect-resistant Bt maize

Hyödyttää varsinkin sitä pienviljelijää:

Quote
Adopting Bt maize could help Uganda’s farmers guard against grain yield losses associated with stem borers, which would help improve household food security, incomes and livelihoods, the study finds.

And by growing Bt maize, Uganda would also eliminate or reduce the costs associated with the use of insecticides and lessen the dangers to humans and the environment due to pesticide misuse or overuse.

Conventional methods of controlling the stem borer range from using a rotational cropping system to applying chemical and biological pest-control products. The scientists deem these methods ineffective, particularly in the African smallholder context, due to financial challenges and the labor and knowledge-intensive nature of the mitigations.

Odotettavissa: "aktivistien" voimistuvaa pelottelukampanjaa juuri siellä.

Keniasta vielä:

With animal feed and food prices soaring across Africa, Kenya relaxes GMO import ban

Quote
The government last month announced its move to relax conditions on importation of genetically modified organisms (GMO) materials for animal feed manufacture.

Livestock [Principal Secretary] Harry Kimtai said the Ministry of Agriculture had decided to review the framework on importation of yellow maize by lowering the requirement to 99.1 per cent GMO free from 100 per cent.

This meant that imports would be allowed to have traces of genetically modified organisms in bid to resolve the shortage of feeds.

***

(Surku)hupaisasti EU on nyt vähän samanlaisessa tilanteessa. Koska Kenia luultavasti on omaksunut tuon alkuperäisen sääntönsä EU:n takia, asetelma on kutkuttava.

Kenian karjataloudessa on paikallisista olosuhteista aiheutuvia vaikeuksia:

Kenyan cows produce 1/10th as much milk as those in Britain — If adopted, gene editing could dramatically improve quality and safety of African livestock

Jotka aiheuttavat noin suuren tuottavuuden laskun. Ja jotka voitaisiin geenieditoinnin keinoin välttää.

Kenia on juuri saanut geenieditointia koskevan lainsäädäntönsä valmiiksi. Kattaako se tuon tapauksen?
