Vielä kerran EU:n suunnitelman vaikutuksesta koko maailmaan:

Viewpoint: Europe’s opposition to gene editing, pesticides means higher food prices for world’s poorest people

Quote
Unfortunately, the current political narrative in one of the world’s wealthiest regions seems to ignore the challenges ahead of us and wants us to turn to less efficient farming. The European Union’s Farm to Fork (F2F) strategy sets out to create a more sustainable food system by the end of this decade. However, looking at the currently proposed ideas, it is worrisome that this new policy framework will achieve the opposite of sustainable farming and lead not just Europe but the entire world in a potential food crisis with massive geopolitical ramifications.

The EU plans to increase the share of organic farming as a total of agricultural production from currently 7.5% to 25%. Additionally, they plan a reduction of 50% in pesticides. At the same time, the F2F strategy does not embrace new technologies that allow farmers to achieve the same yields they are able to produce using the current level of pesticides.

For several reasons, including its low yields and the consequent need to bring more land into agricultural production, organic farming is particularly detrimental to meeting the world’s food demand.

Ja tätä kautta se mitä luultavimmin realisoituu, kuten olemme jo edellä jonkun kerran päätelleet:

Quote
More organic farming in Europe means lower yields of EU food production and higher prices for consumers. The shortage in Europe will be likely compensated by additional food imports from other parts of the world. This will lead to a global increase in food prices. For affluent regions of the world such as Europe, this will be rather a nuisance for consumers. This will have very negative consequences for people already living at the edge of existence and facing hunger.

Mitä tuohon on jo sanonut komissio?

Quote
“There is indeed, for the moment, a yield gap between organic farming and conventional farming that varies enormously from crop to crop and from farming model to farming model. Yet that yield gap will in no way put in jeopardy food security and would not entail an increase in imports,” the spokesperson added.

Tuon vakuuttuneisuuden takana täytyy yllä olla aimo annos luomumatematiikkaa.

Eurooppa työntää ongelmiaan muualle jo nyt:

Europa exportiert Umweltprobleme in den globalen Süden

Quote

Viewpoint: ‘A big mistake’: How Europe’s pro-organic Farm to Fork initiative will harm consumers and farmers

Vielä ehtisi painaa jarrua:

Quote
The European Union is making a big mistake with its “Farm to Fork” initiative. In addition to failing to ensure the institutions necessary to monitor these measures, such a decision to impose organic and pesticide-free agriculture could lead to a drop in the standard of living of consumers and farmers.

I am of the opinion that the “Farm to Fork” strategy  must be seriously rethought or be subject to a long-term moratorium.

Tämä kritiikki tulee myös EU:n sisältä. Portugalilainen professori on laskenut, mitä seuraa/seuraisi, jos suunnitelma toteutuu:

Estimated a global reduction in agricultural production in the EU-27 of 56.13 million tons by 2030 under 'Farm to Fork' strategy

Quote
The agricultural system that allows increasing the soil content in organic matter is conservation agriculture. This system is based on 3 principles: do not mobilize the soil as a way to reduce losses; the return of plant residues to the ground, as a way to increase income; and crop rotation as a way to increase the biodiversity of the system. Organic farming, which also claims this goal, only succeeds in a fallacious way. By promoting soil mobilization, by prohibiting the use of herbicides, it increases soil carbon losses, which then compensates for the use of mass compost and compost applications. But in fact, this enrichment is done at the expense of wasting soil carbon over a much larger area than the beneficiary.

Annaleena Ylhäisen twiitti:

Quote

Limited consumer demand could hinder Europe’s plans to reach 25% organic food production

Quote
Getting the promotion: Farm lobbies argue that market demand rather than EU targets should be a primary driver for increasing organic output, while Commission plans to use around €49 million for organics promotion irked some lawmakers.

Tätähän me jo viisi vuotta sitten Suomessa ihmettelimme:

Valtiovalta katsoo asiakseen edelleen tukea yrityksiä manipuloida kansalaisia

Valtiovalta houkuttelee mainoskampanjalla kansalaisia luomun kuluttamiseen

Jatkona edelliseen.

EU pitches 23 ‘actions’ to achieve Farm 2 Fork targets, including promoting organic food in schools

Joskus (2017) Suomi vähän ohi ohjeiden suuntasi EU:ta tulleen koulumaitotuen luomumaidon tukemiseen. Muutta jatkossa sellainen voi ilmeisesti tapahtua ihan luvallisesti?

Kohta se EU:n luomuohjelma on (viimeisteltynä) tulossa:

Agrifood Brief: Organics sector in line for a not-so organic boost

EU farmers boss: Commission leaving agri sector to wait like ‘animals for slaughter’

... että nyt teuraaksi viedään Euroopan viljelijöitä. Mutta seurausten tutkimattomuudesta on kyse:

Quote
“Without showing us what the consequences of these new initiatives would be on the agricultural sector, we just wait like animals to be slaughtered,” Pekka Pesonen, secretary-general of the EU farmers and cooperatives association, COPA-COGECA, said during a recent EURACTIV event.

While the Commission has previously suggested that each measure in the strategy will be separately evaluated, no overall impact assessment of the EU’s pivotal food policy, the Farm to Fork, is in the pipeline. This is justified on the basis that the initiative is voluntary, Pesonen said.

Ja kyllähän se osittain komission puolelta myonetäänkin:

Quote
Impact assessment remains ‘open question’

Tassos Haniotis, director of strategy, simplification and policy analysis at the European Commission’s DG AGRI, reiterated that every legal proposal put forth by the Commission will be accompanied by an impact assessment, but said that the possibility of an impact assessment covering all elements at the same time is an “open question”.

“We have done an impact assessment when we made our legal proposal and I hope, sooner or later, there are going to be impact assessments that would affect either the environmental side or also the side of the consumer behaviour,” he said.

However, he acknowledged that the series of proposals made by the Commission in strategic forums would have a “short-term negative impact on production”.

Mutta näin komissio sitten linjallaan kehotuksia tähän suuntaan kuitenkin jatkaa:

Komissio esittää toimia luomualan kehittämiseksi

Kuten edellä on tullut esille, palloa heitetään kansallisille hallituksille:

Quote

Maksumuurin takana...

Komissio ennustaa luomutuotteiden hinnan laskevan – EU:lta uusia toimenpide-ehdotuksia luomutuotannolle, jonka osuuden halutaan kolminkertaistuvan 2030 mennessä

Quote
EU:n vastaus ruokajärjestelmän murrokseen on Pellolta pöytään -strategia.

Ludger Wess uudelleentwiittasi
Stuart Smyth
@stuartsmyth66 :in twiitin:

Quote
Wishing the EU good luck with its plan to reduce chemical use by 50%. A high yielding wheat variety produces 25-40 kernels per plant per season. Weeds can produce 1,000–25,000 times more seeds than a crop. Poor weed control becomes a big problem, especially with limited controls.

Viljelijän kirje hollantilaisille yliopistoihmisille EU:n suunnitelmista:

A Farmer’s Letter to the Research Community

Quote
What follows is a rare guest article on this page. The letter, translated from Dutch, is a powerful response by Dutch farmer Michiel van Andel to a recent opinion piece by two Wageningen activist scientists who look favourably on the opportunities of the European Commission’s Farm2Fork strategy of attaining 25% organically grown food. Straight talking, he refers to their antics as “science populism”.
Michiel’s voice must be more widely heard, especially in Brussels where it is clear that farmers’ concerns have been completely ignored amidst the Farm2Fork pandemonium. I first learnt about Michiel when he took the Dutch organic food industry lobby, Bionext (part of the True Cost of Food campaign), to court in the Netherlands for lying about his profession (and he won).
His letter raises an interesting polemic: Should the agricultural research community support farmers or chase their own opportunities and political idealism? Michiel’s message is quite clear: they should stand up for agriculture, providing more realism in the wider debates (like Farm2Fork) and less pie-in-the-sky opportunism.

Kuinka on?

http://gmopundit.blogspot.com/2021/04/if-tropical-rainforest-is-cut-down.html?m=1

“If a tropical rainforest is cut down halfway around the world and I don’t see it, was it really cut down?”

Tuossa viitataan UK:n ruoantuotantoon. Yhtä hyvin olisi voinut viitata EU:n ruoantuotantoon.
