Tällainen.aluevaltaus eli kehitelmä:

First successful gene editing of Cowpea - Israeli Genetics & Seeds Company 'BetterSeeds' redesigns architecture of Cowpea plant to enable its mechanized harvesting

Vaan viljelyn helpoutta, jotta tuota papua saataisiin paremmin laajalti tarjolle.

Itse asiassa jotain tuollaista tulisi soveltaa muihinkin kasveihin.

‘Like turning on a light-switch’: Gene-edited duckweed poised to revolutionize biofuel by eating up pollution and spitting out oil

Quote
Scientists have figured out how to coax copious amounts of oil from duckweed, one of nature’s fastest-growing aquatic plants. Converting such plant oil into biodiesel for transportation and heating could be a big part of a more sustainable future.

For a new study in the Plant Biotechnology Journal, researchers genetically engineered duckweed plants to produce seven times more oil per acre than soybeans—currently the most commonly used biodiesel-producing plant. Study lead author John Shanklin, a biochemist at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory, says further research could double the engineered duckweed’s oil output in the next few years.

Tuo ei kilpailisi viljelysmaasta, ei olisi pois ruoan tuotannosta?

"Duckweed" on suomeksi sorsanlimaska.

Kokonaisarvio viime vuodesta:

Viewpoint: Global crop biotechnology revolution — 2022 saw dramatic advances in agricultural innovation

Esille tulee, miten muualla on tapahtunut paljon.

Quote
The second item of significance is the number of stories from France, Italy, and Austria—all historical hotbeds of opposition to GMOs, and all clearly changing their tunes. This is real. These are signals, not noise.

If doubt remains, consider these items:

Norway is considering granting approval for gene-edited rapeseed oil.
And Finland’s Green Party now supports genetic engineering in agriculture.

When you’ve lost the Scandinavian greens, you’re done.

Tämä lienee nyt uudenlainen hyöty:

Viewpoint: ‘Intransigent regulation’ — Genetic modification solution to limit crop frost damage waits for government green light

Että geenitekniikasta löytyisi apu hallaan ja pakkaseenkin? Joka keino olisi kuitenkin törmännyt USA:ssa byrokratiaan:

Quote
Never missing an opportunity for irony, I responded, “C’mon, Kevin, to prevent frost damage, just spray the trees and plants with commercial preparations of ice-minus P. syringae. Oh, wait, I forgot — EPA prevented their commercialization.”  For those blissfully ignorant about the vagaries of EPA’s regulation of genetic engineering, this requires some unpacking.

Olemme täällä jo maininneet, miten kasvukauden pituutta palkokasveilla on Intiassa onnistuttu geenitekniikalla säätelemään.

EUroopassa alunperin kehitetty violetti tomaatti USA:ssa:

Changing negative perceptions about GMOs? Gene-edited purple tomato with great taste, longer shelf life and as much anthocyanin as blueberries is one of many new GM foods

Quote
The greatest challenge now is getting more governments around the world to approve these genetically modified foods for sale. Although the UK is ahead of other countries when it comes to regulation of gene-edited crops, it’s currently unknown whether the GM purple tomato will be offered for sale there. But it’s expected that purple tomatoes will be available for sale in the US as soon as 2023.

Making moths avoid apples? Gene-edited bio-pesticides in development

Quote
One of Walker’s experiments uses CRISPR gene editing to alter a female moth’s sense of “smell,” so she does not like apples as a place to lay eggs. Another aims to create a biopesticide that interrupts the genetic code translation and shuts down a moth larva’s ability to manufacture a protein critical for survival. This approach is called RNA interference, and it’s already been commercialized for other pests. The third involves altering the genes of existing virus-based pesticides to make them more effective.

Jaa-a.

30% more meat: Switching off just one gene with CRISPR produces animals with larger muscles

Quote
One of the most promising breakthroughs of genome editing in animals is the improved muscle yield in common animal meat sources such as cows, pigs, and fish. Scientists copied a naturally occurring mutation in animals that can lead to more muscles. They achieved this by disabling a protein produced in muscles called myostatin. This small change in the genome can lead to up to 30% more muscle yield in livestock animals.

Vrt.

This is an excellent example of how the organic food industry has to lie about the safety of other food products to maintain sales. Evidence shows that GM corn has 30% fewer carcinogenic toxins than non-GM corn, which includes organic corn.

Tweaking one gene could help crops survive and thrive in salty water

Quote
The gene, called AT1, plays a key role in regulating the plant’s response to saline and alkaline environments. Field experiments have shown that without the gene, crops such as sorghum, rice, wheat, maize and millet have higher yields and biomass when planted in fields with low to medium saline-alkaline content.

The new saline-alkaline tolerant variant for sorghum recorded a grain production increase of 20 percent compared to the controlled group, while biomass could increase by 30 percent, according to the study. Sorghum grains can be made into vital commercial products such as alcohol and vinegar, and sorghum stalks are common livestock fodder for pigs, goats and cattle.

Raportoivat nyt kiinalaiset tutkijat. Mitä arvioidaan saavutettavan:

Quote
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, as of 2015, the world had about 1 billion hectares of soil damaged by high concentrations of sodium, chlorine and sulfate. Around 60 percent of these soils are sodic and have a high alkaline value due to sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate, commonly known as baking soda.

If just 20 percent of the estimated 618 million hectares of sodic land were to grow AT1-deactivated crops, scientists estimated it would lead to the production of at least 250 million metric tons of additional food annually, significantly contributing to world food security, according to the study.
