Miksi GM on hyvä asia?

Tällainen.aluevaltaus eli kehitelmä:

Siinä ei siis kehitetty kasvin varsinaisia ominaisuuksia, joihin oltiin tyytyväisiä. Vaan viljelyn helpoutta, jotta tuota papua saataisiin paremmin laajalti tarjolle.

Itse asiassa jotain tuollaista tulisi soveltaa muihinkin kasveihin. Käsin poimimisesta täytyisi pikkuhiljaa päästä eroon. Parempia korjuurobotteja — mutta joissakin tapauksissa siis geenitekniikastakin voi olla siinä apua.

Scientists have figured out how to coax copious amounts of oil from duckweed, one of nature’s fastest-growing aquatic plants. Converting such plant oil into biodiesel for transportation and heating could be a big part of a more sustainable future.

For a new study in the Plant Biotechnology Journal, researchers genetically engineered duckweed plants to produce seven times more oil per acre than soybeans—currently the most commonly used biodiesel-producing plant. Study lead author John Shanklin, a biochemist at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory, says further research could double the engineered duckweed’s oil output in the next few years.

Tuo ei kilpailisi viljelysmaasta, ei olisi pois ruoan tuotannosta?

Että geenitekniikasta löytyisi apu hallaan ja pakkaseenkin? Joka keino olisi kuitenkin törmännyt USA:ssa byrokratiaan:

Olemme täällä jo maininneet, miten kasvukauden pituutta palkokasveilla on Intiassa onnistuttu geenitekniikalla säätelemään.

Härkäpapuhan on laji, joka olisi muutoin Suomelle monessa suhteessa passeli. Mutta maamme lyhyt kasvukausi rajoittaa sen viljelyn eteläisimmille alueille.

EUroopassa alunperin kehitetty violetti tomaatti USA:ssa:

The greatest challenge now is getting more governments around the world to approve these genetically modified foods for sale. Although the UK is ahead of other countries when it comes to regulation of gene-edited crops, it’s currently unknown whether the GM purple tomato will be offered for sale there. But it’s expected that purple tomatoes will be available for sale in the US as soon as 2023.

Tuosta tomaattilajikkeesta on tämä aloite vetämässä. Mutta palloa on sieltä heitetty takaisin: jonkun muun täytyisi ensin sitä tarjota markkinoille. Katsotaanpa asiaa uudestaan tänä vuonna kun tuo lajike tulee kunnolla USA:ssa myyntiin. Asiassahan vaikuttaa sekin, miten se menee siellä kaupaksi.

One of Walker’s experiments uses CRISPR gene editing to alter a female moth’s sense of “smell,” so she does not like apples as a place to lay eggs. Another aims to create a biopesticide that interrupts the genetic code translation and shuts down a moth larva’s ability to manufacture a protein critical for survival. This approach is called RNA interference, and it’s already been commercialized for other pests. The third involves altering the genes of existing virus-based pesticides to make them more effective.

Jaa-a. Tuosta ei taida olla kuin askel siihen, että kehitetään se Roald Dahlin novellissaan kuvittelema superhajuvesi, joka tekee kenet tahansa naisen täysin vastustamattomaksi. Ja kenestä tahansa miehestä seksipedon.   

Mutta vakavammin: on siis ehkä kehitettävissä menetelmiä, jotka saavat tuholaiset välttelemään hyötykasveja. Sen sijaan, että olisi pakko yrittää haittaeläimet täysin tuhota.
