Irish Timesin kommentti:

Crop failures: Ireland and EU left behind as gene editing marches on
Irish farmers and EU consumers may miss out because of an outdated stance

Viewpoint: The future king of England’s backward views on biotechnology and farming is a ‘threat to the health of the nation’

Quote
Whilst is easy to dismiss Prince Charles as a lingering relic of an archaic hierarchical class structure with no real clout other than being a talking head for people who fear a technology they don’t understand, the truth is that for decades he has exploited his privileged position to attempt to influence Government policy.

Tässä mennään:

UK edges closer to embracing CRISPR gene edited crops, breaking further from the EU

Viewpoint: Canada poised to join expanding number of countries endorsing crop gene editing. That’s encouraging — but global reform remains elusive

Mutta:

Quote
The US and Canada have deregulated gene-edited organisms in principle, moving towards risk-based regulation, while Europe, with its long-standing, intractable opposition to genetic engineering, has decided to equate gene editing with heavily regulated, and sometimes even banned, GMOs. Other nations, such as the UK, are beginning to move away from Europe’s hostile regulatory climate, with hopes of improving their farmers’ livelihoods as well as finding new partners for international food trade, besides their European friends.

Tämä jo nyt (lihav. HJ):

Adoption of GM Crops Can Help Fight Climate Change -Study

Quote
A study by the University of Bonn projected that if the European Union (EU) were to allow the adoption of already existing genetically modified (GM) crops, it could result in a reduction equivalent to 7.5% of the total agricultural greenhouse gas emissions of Europe.
[..]
The results of their study predicted that growing GM crops in the EU could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 33 million tons of CO2 equivalents per year. This is the equivalent of 7.5% of the total agricultural greenhouse gas emissions of the EU in 2017. Likewise, they found that GM crop adoption would lead to higher EU exports, lower imports, and can help decrease the land-use changes in their import-country partners. The researchers cited corn and soybeans as examples. Europe currently imports corn and soybeans from Brazil, among other countries. To keep up with the soybean demand, parts of the Brazilian Amazon are converted to agricultural land. The adoption of GM soybeans by the EU can help alleviate the tropical deforestation in that part of the Amazon. Thus, the adoption of GM crops not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but can help preserve biodiversity as well.

Sitten lisää, jos EU kehittää omia, uusia GM-lajikkeitaan. Kuten pohjoisia jäsenvaltioitaan varten näitä.

Jatkoa tähän:

Viewpoint — Prince Charles’ ongoing rejection of GM, biotechnology-inspired crop advances is the latest example of celebrity disinformation on science

Quote
There are relatively few people in the world who possess sufficient gravitas that the media are prepared to publicize their views on almost anything and everything, and they actually influence policy. Those who immediately spring to mind include George Clooney, David Beckham, Kim Kardashian, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson and of course HRH Prince Charles.

It is unfortunate that the same media that give such views a level of credence for which they do not always justify even as the effects of their assertions has a disproportionate effect on the lives of thousands, even millions of others.

Ranskalaiset tiedepiirit ovat yhtä lailla tämän kannalla:

Viewpoint; Europe needs to embrace cutting-edge biotechnologies for food sustainability and security
(French Association of Plant Biotechnologies (AFBV) | March 4)

Quote
France and Europe, which have intervened at the regulatory level to limit waste at the distribution and consumption stage, must now urgently adapt the regulations in force to allow new genomic technologies (NGT) to make their contribution to limiting production losses at the crop level. The future resilience of our agriculture and thus the safeguarding of our production potential are at stake.

Uusi geenitekniikka, so. geenieditointi, saa siellä siis nyt armon.

With Russian invasion of Ukraine disrupting food supplies, European Union open to importing GMO feed grain to support meat industry

Quote
The European Parliament has moved in the face of the shortage of cereals that European countries are beginning to suffer, from the war in Ukraine, and has asked the European Commission to authorize imports of these raw materials from third countries such as the United States, Canada or Argentina — until now vetoed for being transgenic crops and that use pesticides.

Geenieditoinnin suhteen lähes koko maailma on omaksumassa uudet järkevät säännöt:

Global crop gene editing advances as numerous countries break from European Union’s restrictive policies

Paitsi EU, joka vielä epäröi. Tiiviisti EU:n kyljessä olevista maista Iso-Britannia ja Sveitsi.

Tällä tavalla Norjakin voi livahtaa rivistä:

Norwegian scientists use gene editing to ensure wild salmon and farmed salmon don’t interbreed

Myös Intia on tältä osin siirtymässä tähän leiriin:

India decides gene edited crops and foods will not be as tightly regulated as GMOs

EU:n linjausta odotellaan.

Tätä EU:n politiikka asiassa edelleen on:

https://mobile.twitter.com/transGEN_info/status/1428651627960049665

https://www.transgen.de/zulassung/results?type=&phase%5B%5D=3&order=date

Siten, että niiden viljely EU:n alueella on kiellettyä.

Varsin merkillistähän on juuri tuo EU:n politiikka. Myyntiin hyväksymällä lajikkeet on tavallaan hyväksytty turvallisiksi. Viljely kieltämällä kerrotaan päinvastainen viesti. Tuonti sallimalla kerrotaan sitten erittäin kyseenalainen viesti: on OK, että EU ulkoistaa mahdollisesti vaaralliset, itselleen vaarallisiksi katsomansa asiat.

Saksalaisessa Twitterissä tehtiin rinnastus energiahuoltoon: siinäkin tehdään tavallaan samaan tapaan. Erityisesti  Saksassa.

Koska kummassakin kysymyksessä — GMO:sa ja ydinvoimassa — oikeastaan erehdytään, päällimmäiseksi jää linjausten naurettavuus.

Britanniassa koitti tässä asiassa uusi aikakausi:

DAWN OF A NEW ERA
GM pioneers celebrate as relaxing of rules around gene editing finally comes into force
