Most of the GM crops in the world food chain come from the Americas (from Canada in the north right through to Argentina) and India and China also appears to be adopting it more in their crop plantings. In the EU the planting of GMO crops is banned however they import by the millions of tonnes mostly to be fed to chickens, pigs and dairy animals. To date there has been no discernible difference found in either the meat or milk from these animals when compared to ‘conventionally fed’ animals.

Artikkelissa on vaikuttava kaavio "Exhibit I" maissisatojen kehityksestä. Jossa USA erottuu ylhäisessä yksinäisyydessään yli 10 tonnin keskimääräisillä hehtaarisadoillaan. Kiina ja muut verratut maat ovat saavuttaneet varsin kelvollisen n. 6 tonnin tason. Mutta tuossa on siis nyt "hajurako".

Näin meille Euroopalle puistellaan päätä:

If Gregor Mendel had discovered crosses and the rules of genetic heritability after 2001 its use for crop breeding would have been prohibited by the @EU_Commission and @OrganicsEurope because of the lack of "history of safe use".

Vaikka Britanniaa eivät enää koske EU:n luomusuunnitelmat, ja vaikka siellä geenimuuntelua koskevissa kysymyksissä edetään, on ajan henki sielläkin aiheuttanut tällaisia paineita:

Maatalousministerien epävirallisessa kokouksessa keskusteltiin globaalista ruokaturvasta ja uusista genominmuokkaustekniikoista

Suomi ja monet muut jäsenmaat toivat keskustelussa esiin, että uusilla genominmuokkaustekniikoilla voi olla merkittävä rooli kestävämmän ruokajärjestelmän kehittämisessä. Tekniikoilla voisi olla potentiaalia mm. satotasojen kasvattamisessa ja kasvinsuojeluaineiden käytön vähentämisessä kehitettäessä esim. kuivuudelle ja taudeille vastustuskykyisempiä kasveja. Komissio kertoi laativansa aiheesta lainsäädäntöaloitteen vuonna 2023.

Ministeri Kurvinen totesi ministerien keskustelussa: ”Uusilla genominmuokkaustekniikoilla tuotettujen kasvien käyttö parantaisi ruokajärjestelmän joustavuutta ja kestävyyttä mm. vähentämällä maatalouden tuotantopanosten tarvetta.”

EU ag ministers are finally coming to their senses, recognizing the value of gene editing, fearing they are left behind & thus pushing the EC to relax rules on them arguing this is needed in the face of increasing droughts, climate change, & yield losses.
