Näin kerrotaan:

Gene-edited GABA-enhanced tomatoes begin shipping in Japan

"Shipping"? Eikö se tarkoita vientiä? Japani aikoo siis viedä kehittämäänsä terveellistä tomaattilajiketta.

Uskoisi siis senkin onnistuvan, jos Suomeen jatkossa tuotaisiin em. violettia tomaattia. Kaukaakin.

Nyt tällaiseen on ryhdytty:

Distant tomato relative the groundcherry: Genetic modification poised to rescue key orphan crop

Quote
Over 34 million people in the U.S. don’t have enough food. More diverse and adaptable crops are needed to address challenges in food production made worse by climate change. Small, sweet berries called groundcherries may not feed the country, but along with other related “orphan crops,” they could strengthen food supplies. Unfortunately, these distant relatives of tomatoes aren’t ready for large-scale production—at least not yet.

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) Professor and HHMI Investigator Zachary Lippman is working to change that. Alongside CSHL and HHMI postdoc Jia He, Lippman built genetic blueprints, or models, for two types of groundcherry. These new models can guide plant geneticists toward unlocking groundcherries’ untapped potential. They may also be key in scaling up other nightshade plants for widespread use. Lippman says:

Quote
The nightshade family encompasses more than 20 crops. There’s the major crops—potato, tomato, eggplant—and then there are minor crops, or orphan crops, which are either semi-domesticated or simply wild. A lot of those have not received a lot of research attention, but might have more potential for greater production if they could be developed further.

Eli geenitekniikan avulla otetaan (paremmin) ihmisen käyttöön, ravinnoksi, tähän mennessä aika hyödytön kasvi. Kyse on tästä lajista.

Tuollaisen toiminnan periaatteessa vallan huimista mahdollisuuksista on jo aikaisemmin ollut puhetta.

Eurooppalainen espanjalainen herkkuruoka paella on aina maustettu sahramilla. Nyt on avautumassa uusi mahdollisuus:

Naturally saffron-flavored rice? Here’s how scientists are using genetically modified tobacco and lemon to recreate the world’s most expensive spice

Voidaan toimia joko otsikon idean mukaisesti, tai joka tapauksessa maailman kalleimman mausteen tuottamisesta tulee helpompaa (ja halvempaa):

Quote
“The enzyme we have identified and the multigene engineering strategy could be used to establish a sustainable plant cell factory for crocin production in tissue culture of different plant species. Our biotechnological approach can also be used on crops, such as rice, to develop crocin-rich functional food,” said lead author Xiongie Zheng. The technology can also be used to produce carotenoid-derived scents and colorants.

Kehitetty tekniikka avaa siis myös muita mahdollisuuksia ruoan tekemiseen entistä houkuttelevammaksi.

Ellei ihan tuohon edelliseen mentäisikään, kyllä tämäkin näyttää sahramin kannalta hyvältä:

Saffron, the world’s most expensive spice, is under threat by climate change. Here’s how researchers are using genetic modification to build resilience

Eli oikeaan sahramikasviin saadaan viljelyvarmuutta. Geenitekniikan avulla.

Kerran täällä on toisessa triidissä noteerattu luomusahrami.

Arvio siitä, ettei tällainen linja maalle suinkaan kannata:

Mexico’s GM corn ban could drive country’s economy down 42%, expert warns

Quote
The Government of Mexico’s plan to prohibit imports of transgenic corn as of 2024 would eliminate 42 percent of the national agri-food Gross Domestic Product (GDP), warned Juan Cortina, president of the National Agricultural Council (CNA).

After inaugurating the 2022 Global Agri-Food Forum, the CNA leader pointed out in an interview that what the government intends to do is nonsense, since it will affect jobs in the sector and negatively impact the growth of the national economy .

“It is an ideological and activism issue that I think no longer has space in our country, and more so in a sector that has been growing, that has a dynamism that feeds 125 million Mexicans, we cannot put everything at risk. this for an ideological position,” he said.

PS. Yksi mekanismi, millä tuo Meksikon päätös voi potkia takaisin:

Ainakaan tätä ei pitäisi hylätä. Cameron English:

Viewpoint: GM drought-tolerant crops: Here is one biotech innovation that only anti-GMO science rejectionists can demonize

Eivätkä sitä muut hylkääkään kuin tuo jutussa kuvattu ryhmä.

Quote
If the Non-GMO Project truly cared about the opinions of poor farmers, they’d wholeheartedly endorse the technology these growers want to use. But that won’t happen. The project’s lucrative business model hinges on the myth that biotech crops are uniquely harmful. Because they value their ill-gotten profits over food sovereignty, they will continue to lie to the public. Shame on them.

Valitettavasti tuolla amerikkalaisella ryhmällä on kosolti "ulkojäseniä", hengenheimolaisia täällä Euroopassa.

Hyvä syy, miksi ei kannata rajoittua geenieditointiin (lihav. HJ):

Quote
The BTMAX transgenic event, obtained with the addition of a gene from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), is the result of a 100% national public-private partnership between Embrapa and Helix and was unanimously approved by CTNBio (National Technical Commission on Biosafety) in June 2022.

Ei ole hyödyllistä olla ottamatta sitä käyttöön:

Rejecting ag technology can be costly

By Stuart Smyth & Robert Paarlberg

Quote
Governments that decided to approve GM crops have benefited from higher yields and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. The evidence of lower agricultural productivity for countries that opted to not adopt GM crops becomes glaringly apparent when comparing agricultural production in the European Union with that of the United States.

As we know, the U.S. has approved GM crops, whereas the EU decision found the costs of adoption to be greater than the benefits.

Between 1995 and 2019, the agricultural production index for the 27 countries of the EU increased by only seven percent, while agricultural production in the U.S. increased by 38 percent. Further evidence of the cost of the EU’s failure to adopt GM crops as consistently as in the U.S. found that EU agricultural greenhouse gas emissions are 33 million tonnes higher than if they had adopted GM crops, equalling 7.5 percent of total EU agricultural GHG emissions.

Mutta vielä tärkeämpi juttu se on näissä maissa:

Quote
The costs of not adopting leading food producing technologies are considerably important and evident in food insecure countries, perhaps more so than in industrial ones. Farmers in many food insecure countries lack access to pesticides that could be applied to reduce the populations of insects that attack their crops, thereby reducing yields.

Eli isompi vahinko, jollei ota.

Kanat ja siat saavat vielä odottaa. Mutta mehiläiset saivat rokotteensa:

US approves world’s first vaccine for declining honey bees

Hei, myös YLE kertoi siitä:

Quote
Yhdysvalloissa otetaan käyttöön hunajamehiläisille suunnattu rokote – kehitetty Suomessa

Yhdysvaltain maatalousministeriö on hyväksynyt käyttöön ensimmäisen hunajamehiläisten suojaksi kehitetyn rokotteen, kertoo Britannian yleisradio BBC.

Rokote suojaa mehiläisiä esikotelomädältä (foulbrood disease), joka aikaisemmin on aiheuttanut koko pesän tuhoutumisen.

Rokote sisältää taudin heikennettyä muotoa. Sitä sekoitetaan kuningatarmehiläisen ravintoon, jolloin syntyvät toukat saavat suojan tautia vastaan.

Rokotteen kehittivät itävaltalainen tutkija Dalial Freitak ja hänen suomalainen työparinsa Heli Salmela, jotka työskentelivät Helsingin yliopiston Viikin kampuksella. Asiasta kertoi vuonna 2020 Kauppalehti.

Mietitään jo tällaisia:

Survey on consumer acceptance of CRISPR and other plant-breeding biotechnologies: Would consumers pay higher prices for tastier and fresher grapes?

Quote
In our case study, based on data elicited using an online consumer survey, we specifically examine consumer demand for table grapes produced with and without gene editing (i.e., using conventional modern breeding methods). We consider the differential demand response when these alternative plant breeding methods are used to improve various fruit quality attributes and agronomic characteristics.

Results from this study suggest that respondents as consumers are willing to pay the highest price premiums for improvements in table grape taste and texture, followed by improvements in external appearance, and then reductions in the expected number of chemical applications. Also, most of the respondents would apply a discount to table grapes produced from varieties developed via CRISPR compared to those produced using conventional breeding.
(lihav. HJ)

Eli siis hyötyjä kuluttajille. Ei yksin viljelylle.
