Tällaistakin huhua levitetään, otsikomme mukaisessa tarkoituksessa:

Viewpoint: Debunking bizarre conspiracy theory about western billionaires using GMOs to depopulate Africa

Uchechi Moses, kasvitieteilijä Nigeriasta, käy yksityiskohtaisesti läpi tuossa tuon naurettavan salaliittoteorian. Monsanto ja Bill Gates tietysti esiintyvät tarinassa. Yleisesti Moses haluaa korostaa tätä:

Quote
GMOs developed by Africans, for Africans

Contrary to the notion that Western companies and scientists are behind the spread of GMO and gene-edited crop research programs on the continent, it is actually Africans that are spearheading these efforts. The Nigeria-based International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) as well as the parliaments of Ugandan and Ghana helpfully illustrate this point with their support of crop biotechnology. The assumption that Africans cannot or do not conduct research into biotech crops is simply false. It also props up the mendacious notion that these countries can’t take care of their own affairs.

Nigerian anti-GMO groups resume lawsuit alleging biotech crops violate ‘fundamental rights to life’

Tämä kaveri on todella aktiivinen kaikessa, missä jotain voidaan yrittää tehdä Nigerian ja Afrikan vaurastumisen estämiseksi:

Quote
Nnimmo Bassey, the Director of Health of Mother Earth Foundation stated that …. this case is pivotal to the protection of Nigeria’s food system from the claws of the merchants of agricultural biotechnology whose main agenda is profit no matter the detrimental impacts ….

.
Hänestä on ollut täällä jo puhetta toisessa yhteydessä.

Tuo Nigerian vääntö ja taistelu asiasta kuvataan edellä useissa puheenvuoroissa, jo vuodelta 2016.

Aloita vaikka siitä, miten Nigerian viljelijät protestoivat tuota EU-parlamentin päätöstä. Ja siitä eteenpäin.

Ehkäpä tuo antaa näille muillekin Afrikan valtioille rohkeutta jatkaa tuolla linjalla ...

Twiitti:

C. S. Prakash
C. S. Prakash@AgBioWorld·7. marrask.

Sorry Europe, Africa is on the move with #GMO testing. Maize tested in Mozambique w. insect resistance, drought tolerance; Burkina Faso (cowpea), Ethiopia (cotton), Ghana (cowpea), Kenya (maize), Nigeria (cowpea, cotton), and Uganda (banana, maize, potato), Swaziland (cotton)

... ja muille valita se linja. Ja pelko Euroopan luomuväen "kostosta" lopulta hälvenisi.

Ugandassa pelko on hälvennyt. Siellä otetaan käyttöön perunaruton kestävä GMO-perunalajike:

GMO blight-resistant potato expected to help over 300,000 farmers in Uganda cut pesticide use, boost yields

Gene editing will revolutionize crop breeding in Africa, new paper predicts

Tuolle ei EU millään tavalla saa asettua esteeksi.

Edelliseen jatkona. Tämä on riskinä:

Viewpoint: EU opposition to CRISPR crops threatens sustainable farming in developing world

Rescuing Africa’s staple orphan crops—sorghum, millet, cowpea, cassava and sweat potato—with biotechnology could help feed millions of people

Quote
Africa missed the green revolution, sadly. But there is a way to defuse the continent’s impeding food shortage time bomb. By funding research into so-called orphan crops, commercially neglected but vitally important staple foods in Africa, governments, international organizations and advocacy groups can help the continent’s exploding population launch its own green revolution, with the help of modern crop breeding technologies such as CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing.

Siinä annettiin aika selvä vihje komissaari Urpilaisellekin siitä, mitä EU voisi tehdä!

Jotenkin tuntuu tarpeelliselta kertoa, kuka tuon vihjeen kirjoitti:

Quote
Uchechi Moses is an aspiring plant scientist based in Akwa Ibom State in Nigeria. He holds a BSc in genetics and biotechnology and writes about how capitalism and science can provide food security and prosperity for the next generation of Africans.

African nations warm to crop biotechnology for potential food security gains

Quote
Currently, only farmers in South Africa, Swaziland and Sudan are growing GM crops commercially. Ethiopia, Malawi, Nigeria and Kenya have approved the release of GM crops, but just the latter two countries have begun the rollout to farmers. About a dozen other African countries have GM crop research projects under way, with some of the experiments ongoing for more than a decade now.

Eli vaikka GMO-viljelyä on vielä harvassa maassa, kehitysprojekteja on jo monta. Robert Paarlbergin (ks. tämän keskusteluosion ihan alku) kuvaama kirous on väistymässä maanosan yltä.

Why GMO acceptance in Ethiopia could lead Africa to embrace biotech crops

Pidempään versioon:

GMO debate is democratic test for liberalizing Ethiopia

Mutta kova vääntö asiassa yhä siinäkin maassa on.

Asia edistyy Ugandassa jotenkuten:

Facing disease crisis, Ugandan farmers say they’ll illegally grow GMO cassava to feed their families, increase yields

Quote
Finally, after many years in development, researchers in Kenya and Uganda have genetically engineered a disease-resistant cassava variety that is nearing commercialization. This is a tremendous scientific achievement that could substantially benefit millions of people. The wild card is politics. Opposition stirred by European anti-GMO activists who have infiltrated African civil groups are lobbying hard to put the research and commercialization on hold.

IITA and Bayer launch modern breeding project

Quote
Yield improvement of important African food crops will get a boost with the launch of a new project to be implemented by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in collaboration with Bayer.

Known as Modern Breeding Project (MBP), the project will focus on ensuring that IITA mandate crops—cassava, maize, cowpea, banana, yam, and soybean—achieve the highest yield possible, leading to increased crop productivity on farms.

Rahoituksesta kerrotaan:

Quote
Through this $1.2 million crop improvement project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, IITA will modernize its suite of breeding programs.

Tämä Robert Paarlbergin kirjoitus on jo vuodelta 2014. Mutta ansaitsee silti esille nostamisen:

A dubious success: The NGO campaign against GMOs

Varsinkin, koska edistysaskelista huolimatta tilanne on pysynyt valitettavan samanlaisena. Iskevä lainaus siitä:

Quote
They have not prevented rich countries from using GMO animal feed or GMO cotton, yet farmers and consumers in poor countries need increased productivity for food crops, not animal feed or industrial crops. Today's de facto global ban on GMO food crops therefore looks suspiciously like an outcome designed by the rich and for the rich, with little regard for the interests of the poor.

Quote
In part, international NGO campaigns against GMO foods have succeeded in the developing world because they first succeeded in Europe. This success, in turn, was driven in part by a completely legitimate food safety scare that had nothing to do with GMOs.

Siinä Paarlberg viittasi hullun lehmän tautiin. Jota sitäkin yritettiin saada tehoviljelyn piikkiin, ja tuosta "Horizontalin" puheenvuorostakin näkyy, miten siitä yritettiin loikata geenimuuntelun vaaroihin.

Myös Zimbabwe liittyy asiasta kiinnostuneiden joukkoon.

Prof Ncube opens on GMOs

Quote
Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube said it was essential to open the debate on GMOs.

“The impact of climatic changes and reliance on old agricultural methods over the years requires us to revisit our technologies with a view of enhancing production and productivity. This includes the necessity of adopting modern alternative technologies including tissue culture as well as further assessments of GMOs, through vigorously debate that examine the merits and demerits of genetic engineering,” said Professor Ncube in his widely spread proposal to economic stakeholders.

Mikä onkin tämän ruokatuotannon murheenkryynin kohdalla mitä tervetulleinta kehitystä.

Kiinnostusta on myös sen naapurimaassa, Sambiassa:

‘Science diplomacy’: What the Cold War can teach Africa about battling hunger with GM crops

***

Zambia increases GMO imports after assessment shows ‘products safe for consumption’

Zambia bans GM food aid
