Hiilidioksidin nappaaminen ilmasta
« on: 03.11.19 - klo:06:25 »
Tämä on hyvin kiistelty idea. Avaan nyt kuitenkin keskustelun asiasta viitaten tällaiseen lupaavaan keksintöön:

MIT engineers develop a new way to remove carbon dioxide from air

Vanhastaan on ollut mahdollista kerätä hiilidioksidia tehtaiden savupiipuista, mutta tuossa väitetään keksityn menetelmä, jolla sama olisi mahdollista tavallisen ilman hiilidioksidipitoisuuksilla:

Quote
A new way of removing carbon dioxide from a stream of air could provide a significant tool in the battle against climate change. The new system can work on the gas at virtually any concentration level, even down to the roughly 400 parts per million currently found in the atmosphere.

Mitä sille napatulle hiilidioksidille sitten tehtäisiin? Siitä on jo alustavia ideoita. Noiden lisäksi on tietysti yksinkertainen varastointi jonnekin, pois ilmakehästä.

Tällainenkin keino on nyt ilmestynyt valikoimaan:

Fighting climate change by reprogramming yeast, bacteria to feast on carbon dioxide

Quote
Two research groups from Israel and Austria reported the genetic engineering of bacteria and yeasts respectively that lets them grow biomass out of thin air. Their research represents one of the ways that genetic engineering can be used to address sustainability and climate change. Imagine a day when these organisms could essentially be reprogrammed to eat the carbon dioxide that plagues our atmosphere.

Engineers go microbial to store energy, sequester CO2

Quote
By borrowing nature’s blueprints for photosynthesis, Cornell bioengineers have found a way to efficiently absorb and store large-scale, low-cost renewable energy from the sun – while sequestering atmospheric carbon dioxide to use later as a biofuel.

The key: Let bioengineered microbes do all the work.

Buz Barstow, assistant professor of biological and environmental engineering in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and doctoral candidate Farshid Salimijazi have assembled theoretical solutions and models that calculate efficiency in microbes, which could take in electricity and store carbon dioxide at least five times more efficiently than photosynthesis, the process by which plants turn sunlight into chemical energy.
(lihav. HJ)

Fantastic Findings: German Study Shows Added CO2 Has Led To 14% More Vegetation Over Past 100 Years!

CO2 A Blessing: Just 1 PPM Increase Means Up To 0.8% Greater Crop Yields, New Study Shows

Quote
German site Die kalte Sonne presents a paper by Taylor & Schlenker (2021) which supports this: “Environmental Drivers of Agricultural Productivity Growth: CO₂ Fertilization of US Field Crops“.

The authors assessed the CO₂ fertilization effect on US agriculture using spatially-varying CO₂ data from NASA’s Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) satellite covering the majority of US cropland under actual growing conditions.

They conclude:

Quote
We find consistently high fertilization effects: a 1 ppm increase in CO₂ equates to a 0.5%, 0.6%, and 0.8% yield increase for corn, soybeans, and wheat, respectively. Viewed retrospectively, 10%, 30%, and 40% of each crop’s yield improvements since 1940 are attributable to rising CO₂.”

Maailman ilmatieteen laitos WMO suosittelee niiden käyttöön ottoa.

No, se on tarkistettavissa. Mutta otsikon asiaan:

Jos hiilidioksidia ryhdytään poistamaan, edessä on edellä mainittu problematiikka.

Tätä perinteistä keinoa voidaan kehittää paremmaksi:

How to make trees better
Photosynthesis is the most efficient way to capture carbon; Living Carbon is trying to make it even better

Quote
Living Carbon’s real innovation was taking the genetically engineered process of suppressing photorespiration that was developed for tobacco plants and putting it in trees like the hybrid poplar and Loblolly pine trees. According to Tao, Living Carbon has spliced genes for enzymes from pumpkins and algae into the trees so the carbon dioxide is broken down inside the chloroplast and results in a more efficient process of converting CO2 into sugar with less released back into the atmosphere. This process is based on a naturally occurring one found in certain more photosynthetically efficient plants called C4 plants, which include corn and sorghum.

“More carbon fixed means there is faster growth and bigger plants,” Tao said. And because, according to Tao, about 50% of the biomass of a plant is carbon, bigger plants mean less carbon in the atmosphere.

In a research paper that is yet to be peer-reviewed released by Living Carbon, an experiment in an indoor controlled growing environment found that over five months, trees genetically engineered with Living Carbon’s technology had a 53% increase in above-ground weight than the control plants.

Toinen kehityskohde:

Quote
Living Carbon is also working to reduce CO2 emissions from the other side by finding genes that slow down the decomposition process. Carbon stored in trees can never be truly permanent because the trees are living organisms that will eventually die and will always be at risk of unpredictable wildfires, but slowing decomposition is a way to make the life cycle longer, reducing the CO2 released during this process and the amount of highly flammable kindling in the forest.

Vaikka ohittaisimme tuossa varmasti kiistelyn kohteeksi tulevan geenitekniikan käytön, ihan sama tulee pohdittavaksi kuin edellä. Onko jollain valtiolla/toimijalla oikeutta ottaa pois hiilidioksidia ilmasta?

Carbon Collect Unveils Mechanicaltree™ In Partnership With Arizona State University

Quote
Carbon Collect’s MechanicalTree™ is up to a thousand times more efficient at removing CO2 from the air than a natural tree. The captured carbon from the Mechanical Tree™ can be sequestered or sold for re-use in a variety of applications including food and beverage, industry, agriculture and energy. Future research in emerging sectors such as synthetic fuels promise to expand the use cases for captured carbon.

Battling climate change with carbon-sucking poplar trees

Jos kyse on tällaisesta mittakaavasta:

Quote
Is old-fashioned photosynthesis up to the task of managing the enormous amount of carbon (roughly 36 billion tons per year) that we’re pumping into the atmosphere?

A biotechnology startup in California doesn’t think so.

Ikävä mutta väistämätön kysymys:

If Chevron, Exxon and Shell Can’t Get Gorgon’s Carbon Capture and Storage to Work, Who Can?

Quote
At a cost of more than A$3 billion, Gorgon, the largest carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in the world has failed to deliver, underperforming its targets for the first five years of operation by about 50% finds a new report from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA).

Tämä kysymys säilyy "takaraivossa":

Vaikka ohittaisimme tuossa varmasti kiistelyn kohteeksi tulevan geenitekniikan käytön, ihan sama tulee pohdittavaksi kuin edellä. Onko jollain valtiolla/toimijalla oikeutta ottaa pois hiilidioksidia ilmasta?
