Germany to stop exporting banned pesticides, push for EU-wide halt

Quote
Germany will ban from next spring the export to third countries of pesticides that are not authorised for the EU market and will also push for a bloc-wide export ban together with France.

Entä ne maat, joihin aineita on tähän asti viety? Kysytäänkö niiltä? Tulee heti mieleen: onko aineita, joilla torjutaan heinäsirkkoja,  hyväksytty EU:ssa?

Tuohon:

Plans to slash pesticides remain ‘open’ problem, says agri Commissioner

Quote
Figuring out the fairest approach to reducing pesticide use remains a ‘difficult and open’ problem, according to the EU agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski as member states gear up to formally demand a more comprehensive impact assessment on the issue.
(lihav. HJ)

Commission dangles gene-editing to soften pesticide reduction plan blow

Quote
A letter addressed to MEPs seen by EURACTIV suggests that the Commission hopes to appease critics of the revision of the EU’s pesticide framework by dangling a potential liberalisation of new genomic techniques (NGTs).

Rumaa, ja jossain määrin taitavaa.

MT:ssa kaksi kirjoitusta. Tämä:

Kasvinsuojeluaineista puolet pois? EU-komission tavoite on kova ja korvaavien menetelmien kehittämisellä jo kiire

Quote

Quote
Biologisten torjunta-aineiden lupamenettely on liian hidas.

Valitettavasti katkelmaan ei mahtunut esimerkkejä.

Monesti Politico tietää, missä mennään, mistä päin tuulee:

EU ‘Green Deal’ softens hard-line proposals for extensive restrictions on pesticides as food security concerns escalate

***

Toisessa GLP:n artikkelissa tulee sitten esille, millä tavalla olisi pitänyt edetä:

Viewpoint: Could GMOs that use less pesticides be the ultimate ‘clean’ food that consumers expect?

Euroopassakin.

Luke ("UUTINEN | 7.12.2022"):

NUTRIBUDGET-hanke kehittää ravinteiden käytön optimointia EU:ssa – uusi alusta auttaa ympäristövaikutusten vähentämisessä

Varmaankin liittyy myös tuohon edellä mainittuun vaikutusarvion tekemiseen? Vaikkei tietysti samaa asiaa olekaan.

Afrikkalainen näkemys:

Fake campaigns on pesticides will hurt food security plans

Quote
It is a gap we are facing in Kenya, today, in a crescendo of false statements that may yet shape our future, as local NGOs funded by Germany’s Green Party distribute rounds of videos starring local celebrities holding up tomatoes and sukuma wiki stating that they are poisonous.

The poison, they claim, comes from the pest control products used to produce them.

The same type of blanket campaigning against pesticides has already worked in Europe, which, like the rest of the world, is used to assess pest control products for their safety, scientifically.

It does not do that anymore. It changed its approach. The scientists were approving products that were safe to use and necessary for food production.

Once the European public had been told so many times that all pesticides were poisonous, it was just too politically damaging to keep approving pesticides.

The European Union (EU) banned them without any evidence of risk, just in case they might, one day, be found to be harmful, calling it the ‘precautionary principle’.

It has created a big mess. The EU banned one set of pesticides in case they might ever be found to be endocrine disruptors, which interfere with human hormone systems, causing reproductive and other issues.

Under more political pressure, the EU banned the use of these same pesticides on imported foods from other nations, dozens of countries launched a world trade dispute against Europe, calling the ban a trade barrier, and demanding the EU deliver evidence any of the chemicals were endocrine disruptors.

Tuontikieltojen kautta torjunta-aineiden summittainen vähentäminen uhkaa siis muidenkin maanosien ruokaturvaa?

Plus tuo kampanjointi eurooppalaisella rahoituksella.

Huomattu:

Viewpoint: Why an EU ban on crop pesticide exports based on the misguided precautionary principle will hurt global farming

Quote
As part of its Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability – Towards a Toxics-Free Environment , published on 14 October 2020, [the European Commission] announced that the European Union will “lead by example and, respecting its international commitments, will ensure that hazardous chemicals banned in the European Union are not produced for export, including by amending applicable legislation where necessary”.

The Luddites obviously rejoiced.

Itse juttu ranskaksi, mutta siinä kiinnitettiin huomiota asiaan, joka on jo aiemmin huomattu täälläkin.

Spiked (10.2.2023):

The farmers fighting back against the irrational elites

Quote
Nothing speaks to the madness of the modern elites better than their war on farming. Consider France. One day President Macron is telling the world to get serious about ‘food security’. Post-Covid and with war raging in Ukraine, we must make sure food keeps being made and transported around the world, the French government says. Yet, at the same time, that same government, without missing a beat, is bringing in pesticide bans that could devastate sections of France’s own agriculture industry. Which could even lead to the closure of farms. Behold the schizophrenia of the 21st-century establishment.

Mutta nyt:

Quote
On Wednesday, hundreds of farmers drove their tractors through central Paris in protest at new pesticide restrictions. Don’t worry if you haven’t heard about this latest farmers’ revolt on the continent – the tractor uprising against the laptop elites rarely makes the mainstream news these days. The farmers are furious over the government’s ban on neonicotinoids, a chemical that kills insects that eat plants. Such insecticides are potentially harmful to bees, and so farmers will be forbidden from using them. And the fact that the ban will hit sugar-beet farmers particularly hard, potentially leading to the closure of sugar factories? Doesn’t matter. Bees come first.

Vaikka myönnänkin, että on olemassa muitakin keinoja kuin torjunta-aineet: esimerkiksi geenimuuntelu!  8)

Tyytymättömyyttä. Haittaa tätäkin:

EU targets blamed for stalling pest management progress in Greece

Quote
The rollout of integrated pest management (IPM) has been beset with setbacks in Greece over the last decade despite some positive results, with farmers taking umbrage with ‘restrictive’ EU targets which they see as stalling progress.

IPM is an ecosystem-based strategy that focuses on the long-term prevention of pests or their damage through a combination of techniques applied in order of hierarchy to minimise the use of chemical plant protection products to the greatest extent possible.

The system is a core part of Greece’s 2020 National Action Plan for Pesticides, which stresses that it plays a vital role in the country’s environmental and climate action.

As such, a number of actions have been implemented with the initiative of the ministry of rural development and food in order to encourage the uptake of IPM, including crop-specific guidelines drawn up annually to provide professional users of pesticides with tailored advice.

IPM nähtiin vielä joitakin vuosia sitten Ratkaisuna:

Mitä ihmettä tämä integroitu torjunta eli IPM on?

No herbicides, vs POST only vs PRE plus POST. Early season weed control (at planting) can protect crops from competitive interactions, especially under stress conditions. Look at the difference in leaf rolling.
