Bangladeshissa:

Bangladesh to import blight resistant GMO varieties developed at Michigan State University

Ja kyllä, Michigan ei sijaitse Bangladeshissa. Mutta noin tapahtuu.  Ja tätä tavoitellaan:

Quote
The Bangladeshi government has finally allowed its scientists to import two blight resistant (RB) potato varieties, developed at the Michigan State University (MSU), and also agreed that field trials can be conducted with the varieties. Once approved for commercial release, the RB potatoes will become Bangladeshi farmers’ answer to tackle late blight, saving them about Tk. 100 crore (about USD12 mil) on fungicide expenses.

Tällaista temppua on onnistuttu käyttämään puuvillan erään tuholaisen torjumisessa:

GM, insect resistant Bt cotton and 11 billion sterile moths eliminated pink bollworm from the US and Mexico

Siinä oli itse asiassa yhdistetty kaksi keinoa, molemmat geenimuuntelusta peräisin.

Perusteluja sille, miksi tämän geenimuunneltu lohi on hyvä juttu:

Viewpoint: Do we really need GM fish? The case for growing (and eating) AquaBounty’s biotech, fast-growing salmon

Scientists solve 30-year wheat rust genetics puzzle

Famine in Africa and the Middle East? Devastating stem rust fungus threatens global staple crop, but genomic solution may finally be on the horizon

Eli pelätty Ug99 selätettäneen myös.

Onko Borlaugin unelma nyt toteutettu:

‘Like putting 5 locks on a door’: Wheat with multiple rust resistance genes could protect vital staple crop

Eli se ongelma ratkaistu?

Quote
Dr Ayliffe said this study had targeted stem rust, but the same technology can be used to breed against stripe and leaf rust diseases as well, and in different existing wheat varieties to add resistance. “One of the genes we selected actually protects against stem, leaf and stripe rust diseases, so it’s entirely possible to include genes that also work against other rust species,” he said.

Viewpoint: Promoting CRISPR crops at the expense of GMOs undermines both technologies

Taktisesti varmaan kannattaa tuoda geenieditoidut lajikkeet erikseen.

Kiinalaiset tiedemiehet ovat onnistuneet tällaisessa:

Genetically modified rice could help address China’s smog problems

Asiassa on edistytty:

Chinese Scientists Discover Rice Gene for Adaptation to Low Soil Nitrogen

Quote
Scientists from the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) have found a gene that plays an important role in helping rice adapt to low soil nitrogen. Nitrogen fertilizer has an indispensable role in increasing crop yields, but on the other hand, it creates a severe threat to ecosystems. For this reason, breeding new crop varieties with high nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) is a high priority for both agricultural production and environmental protection.

Ludger Wess uudelleentwiittasi
Channa Prakashin twiitin
13. helmik.

Quote
Europe’s refusal to allow GM crops led to the avoidable emission of 33 millions of tonnes of climate-damaging CO2, a new scientific analysis reveals. Allowing gene-edited crops would help mitigate the emission. So Europe, if you are truly green act up!

Linkillä Mark Lynasin artikkeliin:

EU’s refusal to permit GMO crops led to millions of tonnes of additional CO2, scientists reveal

Quote
The opportunity cost of the EU’s refusal to allow cultivation of GE varieties of key crops currently totals 33 million tonnes of CO2 per year, the experts say.

This is equivalent to 7.5 percent of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the entire European agricultural sector, or roughly what might be emitted each year by 10-20 coal-fired power stations.

Given that farmers in North and South America adopted GE crops from the late 1990s onward, this analysis implies that over subsequent decades the additional carbon emitted due to the EU’s opposition to genetic engineering will likely be in the hundreds of millions of tonnes.

Quote
With Europe’s farmers condemned to lower total agricultural yields because of GE crop non-adoption, more farmland globally has to be kept in production or plowed up which otherwise might be available for forests to sequester carbon in trees and soil.

Tästä tekniikasta on ollut puhetta aiemminkin:

Spray-on viral treatment can ‘fine-tune’ crops as they grow, without genetic engineering

Eli varsinaisesti perimää muuttamatta pystytään hiljentämään tai virittämään joidenkin geenien vaikutus. Vieläpä vauhdissa:

Quote
For crop production, the technology could provide a new management tool to tune agronomic performance post hoc. Depending on local weather conditions, key genes in developmental pathways could be selectively reprogrammed.

Geenieditoinnilla saadaan ehkä pelastettua nyt suuressa vaarassa oleva Cavendish-banaanilajike:

CRISPR-Edited Bananas

Quote
I do wonder what someone from 2010 would have thought about a tv show accurately depicting 2020. In any case, one of the throw-away lines of the show was that there are no more bananas. The writers did their research – that the Cavendish banana will disappear sometime in the 2020’s is extremely likely. It is being threatened by a fungus called Tropical Race 4 (TR4), which a century ago wiped out the previous commercial dessert banana, the Gros Michel (it’s not extinct, but cannot be grown commercially anymore).

Quote
TR4 is now on every continent that grows bananas. It is literally just a matter of time before the entire commercial Cavendish market is wiped out.

Käytännössä kaikki myytävä banaani on nykyisin tuota lajiketta.

Quote
TR4 and similar funguses also threaten other banana varieties (more like plantains) that provide a staple source of nutrition for large segments of the world (about 400 million people). So this is not just about no longer having access to a favorite dessert fruit – this can create a serious threat to food security in parts of the world.

Tällaisessa piilee ratkaisu tuohon ongelmaan:

Quote
Fortunately, nature already has a partial solution – some wild type bananas have a gene, RGA2, that provides resistance to TR4. In fact, the RGA2 gene is already present in the Cavendish, it is just expressed 10% of that of the resistant varieties. So all the scientists have to do is activate the expression of the already present RGA2 genes in the Cavendish. They have done this and are already in field trials, which are showing enhanced resistance.

Quote
Kas niin, pari vuotta sitten pelättiin Cavendish-banaanin viljelyn loppuvan "panamantaudin" vuoksi. Nyt australialaisyliopisto on jalostanut geenieditoinnilla tautia kestävän linjan, jota voidaan myydä EUn ulkopuolella non-gmo-banaanina.

Aivan, noinhan se on. Mutta EU:ssa se vaatii erillisen hyväksynnän. Ja GMO-merkinnät.
