A team led by Laura Bloomer concluded here in a report that “burning trees and other forest biomass for energy is contrary to climate mitigation, biodiversity protection, and environmental justice goals” and that “governments must stop promoting climate-damaging forest bioenergy.” The researchers are calling for a stop to the folly of burning trees.

A recent article in United Kingdom (UK)-based newspaper The Guardian gives fair coverage to the idea that biomass energy may not be as environmentally friendly as its advocates claim. This is especially true in the case of wood pellet biomass power plants in the UK, where the majority of pellets are shipped across the Atlantic from the United States and Canada.

The article, “Burning imported wood in Drax power plant ‘doesn’t make sense’, says Kwarteng,” describes the recent comments by the UK’s business and energy secretary Kwasi Kwarteng. Kwarteng says that “[t]he importing of wood to burn in Drax power station “is not sustainable” and “doesn’t make any sense,” The Guardian reports.

This issue is explored in a Climate Realism post, “Real Threats to Biodiversity and Humanity,” which says that “nearly 300,000,000 trees per year” are cut down and turned into wood pellets that go to the Drax plant. As Paul Driessen explains in the post, “[t]hat’s one year to slash and burn the fuel, and fifty years to regrow replacement trees.”

Despite growing public opposition, the European Parliament voted this week not to declassify woody biomass as renewable energy. The forest biomass industry quickly declared victory, while supporters of native forests announced their plan to continue the fight — even in court.
    The EU likely renewed its commitment to burning wood as a source of energy largely to help meet its target of cutting EU carbon emissions by 55% by 2030, something it likely couldn’t achieve without woody biomass (which a carbon accounting loophole counts as carbon neutral, equivalent to wind and solar power).
    Scientific evidence shows that burning wood pellets is a major source of carbon at the smokestack. The European Union also likely continued its embrace of biomass this week as it looks down the barrel of Russian threats to cut off natural gas supplies this winter over the EU’s opposition to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
    While the EU decision maintains that whole trees won’t be subsidized for burning, that natural forests will be protected, and that there will be limits to logging old growth and primary forests, these provisions include legal loopholes and were not backed with monitoring or enforcement commitments. No dates were set for biomass burning phase down.

Mutta minkäs teet. Puu on kuitenkin säädeltävissä oleva energialähde. Tuttavapiirissäni kynnelle kykenevät keräävät nyt klapivarastoja ensi talveksi. Samoin kuulemma tapahtuu Saksassakin.

It’s easy to argue that the “green” movement is causing much more environmental harm than good. High energy costs are leading to poverty, which in turn leads to less investment in environmental protection and nature conservation.

Biodiversity-rich forests are being cleared away to make room for wind parks and people are increasingly burning wood to stay warm as an alternative to natural gas and heating oil.

Blackout News here reports on how forests in Romania have been falling victim to illegal logging as the energy crisis has propelled the demand for firewood and pellets to rocket speed. “In Romania, entire nature reserves are disappearing as a result.”

“The sharp increase in demand for firewood, wood chips and pellets has also caused prices for these fuels to rise sharply, making them extremely lucrative for the illegal trade,” writes Blackout News. A lack of transparency and traceability are making the problem impossible to manage.

Näin, vaikkei niin meneteltäisikään kuin edellisen puheenvuoron liettualainen viljelijä.

Pienhiukkaspäästöistä puolet tulee puunpoltosta ja ensi talvena puuta palaa kotien tulipesissä entistä enemmän.

Jonka uhkan olemassaolo on koko ajan tiedetty.

Vanhalla teknologialla on kieltämättä puolensa. Mutta kyllä ne toisetkin puolensa.

Paperihesarissa oli kuvia valtavista halkopinoista kantakaupungin alueella sodan aikana. Siitä mahdollisesta seurauksesta ei ole vielä mitään keskustelua syntynyt.

SUOMESSA pienhiukkasten arvioidaan tappavan noin 1 600 –1 800 ihmistä vuosittain. Yksi keskeinen pienhiukkasten lähde on puun poltto kotitalouksissa.

Näin siis em. klapihamsterienkin voi arvioida kylmän rauhallisesti Suomessakin valmistautuvan joukkotappoon. Vai joukkomurhaan? Suunnitelmallisuutta on asiassa mukana.

Brittien Drax-hankkeesta on ollut edellä puhetta. Ja sitä kohtaan esitetystä kritiikistä. Tässä artikkelissa kritiikille ei ole sijaa, kun ylistetään logistiikkaa:

About 15 years ago, government incentives helped to launch a biofuel boom in the United States. Ethanol factories now consume about 130 million metric tons of corn every year. It’s about a third of the country’s total corn harvest, and growing that corn requires more than 100,000 square kilometers of land. In addition, more than 4 million metric tons of soybean oil is turned into diesel fuel annually, and that number is growing fast.

Scientists have long warned that biofuel production on this scale involves costs: It claims land that otherwise could grow food or, alternatively, grass and trees that capture carbon from the air and provide a home for birds and other wildlife. But government agencies, relying on the results of economic models, concluded that those costs would be modest, and that replacing gasoline with ethanol or biodiesel would help to meet greenhouse gas reduction goals.

Suomi onnistui vähentämään fossiilisten polttoaineiden käyttöä mutta ryhtyi polttamaan tilalla puuta. Mitä tapahtui päästöille, kysyy HS:n ympäristötuottaja Piia Elonen analyysissaan.

Tämä tajutaan nyt yhä yleisemmin:

Mitä siis on tullut ilmastopahisten tilalle?

Aurinko- ja tuulivoimaa, kyllä. Mutta ennen kaikkea puuta. Vuodesta 1990 puupolttoaineiden kulutus on kasvanut lähes 60 prosenttia.

Puu on kyllä kotimaista, ja uusiutuvaakin, mutta sen päästöttömyys on sopimuksenvaraista.

Jos kiipeää puuta polttavan tehtaan, talon tai lämpövoimalan katolle ja mittaa päästöt, piipun päästä tulee ehtaa hiilidioksidia. Sitä samaa, joka ilmastoa lämmittää.

Kaiken lisäksi tuotettua lämpöä kohden päästöjä tulee puunpoltosta jopa enemmän kuin fossiilisista polttoaineista.

Eikä enää uskota siihen, että kaikki puusta tuleva sitten heti sitoutuu takaisin puuhun. Eli olisi kiertävää hiiltä.

Eli kohoavien polttoaineiden hintojen ongelma ratkaistaisiin maissin energiaviljelyllä! Minä muuten muistan tuon vaiheen. Kaiken kukkuraksi Saksan vihreät tuolloin vaativat, että energiamaissikin pitäisi tuottaa luomuna!
