Commission asks industry, member states for ‘input’ into EU fertilisers communication

The European Commission has met with industry and member states to ask for proposals for its upcoming fertiliser communication, but seemingly has no plans to broaden consultations, a move that has sparked backlash among NGOs.

EU Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski met with the board of fertilisers lobby Fertilizers Europe, which includes representatives from industry players like Yara, Borealis and Grupa Azoty, on Wednesday (19 September) for what he called a “very important meeting on the eve of the preparation of the EC’s communication.”

Eli jäsenvaltioiden ja tuottajien kanssa aiotaan lannoitteista nyt keskustella. Mutta NGO:t jäävät näillä näkymin ulos. Mikä niitä kismittää. Erityisesti kai niitä, jotka aikoivat tuoda esille, että ihan hyvä, ei lannoitteita oikeastaan tarvitakaan.

Ennallistamiseen:

EU haluaa ennallistaa Suomen metsät, vaikka todellinen luontokato on aivan muualla

Metsällä ei ole tiettyä tilaa, jossa se pysyisi tai johon sen voisi palauttaa. Siksi olemassaoleva metsien ennallistaminen olisi täysin mielivaltaista, kirjoittaa Seppo Vuokko kolumnissaan.

Hiertää se asia Suomen hallituksessakin. On myönnettävä, että vaikea kysymys se on.

Yritetään nyt alkuun tällä selvittää itsellemmekin, mistä on kysymys:

Ehkä sen verran uskaltaa jo sanoa, että vähän sitä ihmettelee tahoja, jotka ovat kovasti ennallistamisen takana. Mutta suhtautuvat (muualla, muutoin) "kevytmielisesti" luomuviljelyyn. Kuten WWF:

MTK:n näkemyksestä otteita:

Vastuutonta vastuullisuutta emme kaipaa: Ekologista, taloudellista ja sosiaalista kestävyyttä pitää edistää rinnakkain

Ei myöskään Brysselissä, jossa hallintokausi on myös kääntymässä loppusuoralle ja vihreä vallankumous ilmeisesti yritetään saada valmiiksi keinolla ja hinnalla millä hyvänsä.

Ennallistaminen, metsäkato, taksonomia, uusiutuvan energian direktiivi RED ja moni muu sana alkaa olla puhekielen yleisiä sanoja, vaikka harva meistä voi ymmärtää niiden todellista sisältöä �" ja tuskin kukaan kokonaisuuttakaan. Eivät päättäjätkään.

Kustannus- ja hyötyhaitari on satoja miljoonia tai jopa miljardeja euroja.

Vastuullisuutta on ajattelutapa ja toiminta, jossa otetaan huomioon kestävyyden kolme ulottuvuutta tasapainoisesti. Ekologista, taloudellista ja sosiaalista kestävyyttä voidaan edistää rinnakkain, jolloin kyseessä on aidosti vastuullinen toiminta. Jos niitä edistetään erikseen tai unohdetaan joku osa-alueista, kyse on vastuuttomuudesta.

Elinkeinoja on harjoitettu ja kehitetty parhaimman käytettävissä olevan tiedon mukaisesti. Ja hyviä tekoja tehdään uuden tiedon valossa jatkossakin joka päivä. Järkevät uudistukset etenevät takuuvarmasti, jos niiden toteuttaminen on myös käytännössä mahdollista ja ovat tasapainoisia.

Tiedon käyttämisestä EU:ssa edellä useastikin.

Spanish biologist: ‘No evidence that organic diet better for health or organic farming better for the environment’

[José Miguel Mulet:] The only thing they guarantee is that they have been grown according to a regulation that tells you what you can put and what you can’t. The problem is that production is very low. Europe wants to promote it but it only talks about increasing surface area but you don’t buy in square metres, but in kilos. They only talk about the surface because it is clear that production is going to plummet. Are they healthier? The only variable you control is the growing method, not what you grow. Getting drunk on organic wine is just as bad for your health as on non-organic wine. There is no evidence that a diet based on organic products is better, the only clear thing is that it is much more expensive.

[Mulet:] No. If productivity falls, you need more land to get the same food, and the environmental impact and the water footprint skyrocket. Organic regulation is not based on objective parameters, such as the carbon or water footprint, but on a philosophical principle without a scientific basis that what is natural is better. There are problems. For example, in organic viticulture copper is used as a fungicide and it is a terrible contaminant. Therefore, the ecological seal does not guarantee less environmental impact. It will depend on the crop.

With plans for a national nutrition strategy in the EU Farm to Fork vein, German agriculture minister Cem Özdemir wants to make diets healthier and more plant-based, but some say the proposal is dictating what people can and cannot eat.

With its nutrition strategy, the government wants to boost the transformation of food systems and make diets healthier as well as more sustainable.

To this end, the strategy’s specific goals include an increased share of plant-based products, a reduced sugar, fat and salt content in processed meals, and a higher share of seasonal, regional, and organically produced food.

Maailman väkiluku jatkaa kasvuaan ja ruoan kysyntä samoin, mutta EU:n viljantuotannon ennustetaan vähenevän. Näin siitäkin huolimatta, että EUssa on maailman parhaat pellot ja ekotehokkain tuotanto.

Today, at the 2022 EU Agricultural Outlook Conference, the European Commission presented its latest medium-term outlook for EU agricultural markets, income and environment until 2032.

HJ: komissaari Wojciechowski puheessaan ei suostu näkemään mitään syytä tuohon EU:n luomuistamispyrkimyksessä. Vaihtoehtoiset tuotantotavat (=luomu) esitetään vain hyvässä valossa.

In Europe the average family currently pays slightly more, 13 percent of their income to feed themselves �" with people in some nations there paying as high as 26 percent. Yet, in response to the climate, COVID, and conflict crises, the EU is rolling out initiatives which may in fact worsen this situation. According to the USDA’s Economic Research Service, the EU’s so-called Green Deal and Farm to Fork initiative could cause food prices to rise upwards of 17 percent.  And again, those who can least afford it will be impacted the most.

Kahdenlaista huolta:

Commission’s actions on fertilisers not long-term enough, MEPs warn

During an extensive plenary debate on Thursday (16 February), MEPs passed a non-legislative resolution on the EU executive’s communication to ensure the availability and affordability of fertilisers in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

But for the Greens and the Left groups, the short-term vision of centre-right and conservative groups risks undermining the EU’s climate ambitions.

“The now tabled fertiliser resolution is on many levels problematic,” said Austrian Green MEP Thomas Waitz, “instead of helping farmers decrease their dependence and the use of Russian or US fracking gas, the European People’s Party (EPP) demands to cough up more money for fertilisers.”

“What you can see is the attempt by the conservatives to undermine the EU Green Deal again,” he added.

Additionally, Duch leftist MEP Anja Hazekamp raised that “artificial fertilisers and too much manure are damaging to soils” and “without healthy soil, we cannot grow food.”

“Almost three-quarters of our soils are in a bad state,” she said, asking the Commission whether the long-awaited EU soil nutrient strategy can still be expected by June 2023.

Saksan hallitus on tiukasti tällä linjalla:

German government takes first step towards more organic farming

Germany’s agriculture ministry is pushing for more organic food in canteens and restaurants in a first step towards achieving the coalition’s 2030 goal of ensuring 30% of arable land is dedicated to organic farming.

'Canteens' viitannee laitosruokailuun. Samanlaista keinovalikoimaa siis aiotaan käyttää kuin Suomessakin. Artikkeli ei selvennä, millä tavoin yksityiset ravintolayritykset saataisiin tarjoamaan enemmän luomua.

Mutta ehkä kannattaa kiinnittää huomiota siihen, että siellä kuitenkin jollakin tavalla nähdään luomun kulutuksen lisääntyminen edellytyksenä luomuviljelyalan kasvulle. Selvästi luomuun kallellaan oleva kirjoittaja (tai haastateltu luomuväki) haluaa yhä nähdä näin:

However, the demand for organic food in Germany already exceeds domestic production for many products. The latest sector report of the organic food industry also concludes that production increases in the past year could hardly keep up with the growing demand.

As such, an increase in demand would not necessarily lead to an increase in domestic production but would have to be covered by imports, at least in the short term.

Eli ei suostu näkemään merkkejä luomun kysynnän vähenemisestä Saksassa. Ainoa ongelma on siinä, että "kasvava kysyntä" kohdistuukin tuontituotteisiin.

Myös Saksan hallitus aikoo kasvattaa aikuisia kansalaisiaan:

Mutta onko EU:n luomuistamissuunnitelmaan kuitenkin tulossa muutoksia? Tämän mukaan siltä näyttäisi (tai se olisi ainakin mahdollista �" ja toivottavaa):

However, the review of recent surveys and policy initiatives in this paper indicates that European attitudes as well as European regulation toward sustainable agriculture are in a process of change. This change of mind may be related to the growing pressure to create a productive post-fossil agricultural economy that is less dependent on environmentally problematic agricultural input while still producing increasing yields to ensure affordability of healthy and sustainable food even in times of global crisis. This is only possible by making use of all currently available options to promote sustainable intensification.
