Of course, the positive association between agriculture and insect population increases applies to existing fields, not forest or natural grassland cleared for cultivation. As van Klink has pointed out in interviews, the conversion of land to accommodate more farming would also destroy habitat.

But that is exactly the point if sustainability is the key: using technology to boost yields on existing cropland—growing more food on less land—is the most important action we can take to protect habitat and biodiversity.

And that’s what’s been happening. In a 2013 paper titled “Peak Farmland and the Prospect for Land Sparing,” three scholars at Rockefeller University calculated that global increases in crop yields as the result of advanced technologies, including genetic engineering, meant it took about one-third the amount of land in 2010 to grow the same amount of food as in 1961.

Hehkutetaan luomutilaa:

Auki jää, onko tässä mukana tutkimusta:

Vennan tila on mukana tänä keväänä alkaneessa projektissa, jossa pyritään parantamaan pääskyjen elinoloja.

Arlan ja lintujen suojelu- ja harrastusjärjestö BirdLifen yhteishankkeeseen lähti mukaan 20 maitotilaa ympäri Suomea.

BirdLifen asiantuntijat vierailevat tiloilla neuvomassa niitä esimerkiksi tekopesien asentamisessa. Tilojen avuksi on laadittu opas, jossa annetaan vinkkejä ja työkaluja pääskyjen elinolojen parantamiseen.

Vai onko Arla ja BirdLife jo päättänyt, että luomusta etsitään ratkaisua?

Hyvää tarkoittavien ihmisten tekojen huonot seuraukset. Kanadalainen tutkimus:

Hiukan syrjään otsikosta. On muitakin asioita, joissa kanpunkilaisten puuhastelu ei saa loppupelipisteitä.

Siinä mm. tämä:

Indeed, one FAO official recently took the EU to task for sacrificing agricultural productivity gains in its Green Deal policy approach, which includes targets to halve pesticide use, cut fertiliser use by 20%, and dedicate a quarter of agricultural land to organic farming.

David Laborde, director of the FAO agri-food economics division, warned: “The less Europe produces, the less it will export, and the more it will demand on global markets. This can increase tension.”

Crucially, Laborde added that the issue at stake should not be about sacrificing either productivity or sustainability but rather: “how EU countries can get sustainable intensification gain and productivity at once.”

The problem with the land sharing approach is that it seeks to deliver food production and conservation at the same time, for example by reducing input use and production intensity and creating small-scale habitats such as unsprayed field margins and small patches of woodland.   Typically, a land-sharing approach results in lower yields, so that at a national or global level a greater land area is required to produce the same amount of food. 

Andrew Balmford and Ian Bateman recently warned in the journal Nature that countries like the UK which are adopting land sharing policies with the intention of reducing farming’s environmental impact – including agri-environment schemes, rewilding and organic farming – may unwittingly accelerate global biodiversity loss and negative climate impact by reducing domestic production and driving up food imports unless corresponding policy action is taken to deliver yield increases elsewhere to maintain and expand domestic food production.

Hämähäkit ovat yleisesti meidän puolellamme, koska ne pitävät hyönteispopulaatioita aisoissa. Jos niitä ei olisi, hurjimmissa skenaarioissa ruoka maailmasta, tai ainakin meiltä, loppuisi. Koska hyönteiset pistäisivät kaiken poskeensa.

Niin vähän on ihminen kuitenkin hämähäkkejä arvostanut, että vasta nyt tapahtuu tämä:

Kuka muka kammoaisi jokanopsakkia? Suomen hämähäkit saivat uudet, vähemmän pelottavat nimet

Ja tästä lähdettiin:

Lajeja on Suomessa noin 650. Niistä vain noin sadalla on aiemmin ollut suomenkielinen nimi.

Luomua ei mielestäni koskaan ole tuotu hämähäkkien kohdalla esiin. Ei ole esim. väitetty, että juuri luomupellolla tai -tilalla niitä olisi tavanomaista enemmän. Ne eivät selvästikään ole mediaseksikkäitä otuksia.

Vuosikymmeniä sitten harrastimme mökillä lasten kanssa jotain luontoteemaa. Yhtä kerrallaan. Kasvit, perhoset, koppakuoriaiset. Hämähäkkien kohdalla tuli tenkkapoo: mistään ei tueksemme löytynyt hämähäkkikirjaa! Päinvastoin kuin noista muista.
