Näin saavutetaan asetetut tavoitteet:

In The Name Of Climate Protection: Deforesting The US To Make Europe Greener!

Tästä ajattelutavasta tuo lähtee:

Quote
Burned shows in a frightening way how more and more wood chip factories have have set up in the USA. They are all located near coasts, mainly in the east of the country and therefore near ports. These ports are important because there are massive exports to Europe, among others.

After all, the EU has also decided to give the energy blessing to wood-burning. As a result, the forests in the eastern part of the United States have also been massively destroyed since 2000.

Tuohon äskeiseenkin tämä näkemys tai tutkimustulos:

Global Warming Solved! Scientists Find Reforestation Can Cool The Surface By 2-6°C Relative To Grassland Area

'Carbon-neutrality is a fairy tale': how the race for renewables is burning Europe's forests

Tästä siinä on edelleen kyse (lihav. HJ):

Quote
Sustainability goes to the heart of the European renewable energy debate. The drive to replace coal, one of the world’s biggest sources of carbon emissions, with cleaner sources of power, is a top priority in the fight against climate change globally.

A switch to burning wood in the form of pellets appears to offer a simple and in theory carbon-neutral alternative to coal-fired power stations because trees take up carbon dioxide from the air as they grow. As long as the burned trees are replaced with new plantings, there is no net addition to the stock of carbon in the atmosphere.

However, that process of carbon take-up can take many decades. And in the furnace, burning wood releases more carbon dioxide per unit of energy than burning gas, oil, or even coal. By accelerating carbon dioxide emissions in the short term, burning wood for electricity could be fatal for states’ ability to meet the Paris Agreement goal of keeping global heating to well below 2C by 2050.

Kuitenkin puu eli biopolttoaineet ovat mukana mm. Petteri Taalaksen paletissa (lihav. HJ):

Quote
Niiden sijasta on siirryttävä käyttämään uusiutuvia energialähteitä tuulta, aurinkoa, ydinvoimaa ja jossain mitassa myös bioenergiaa.

Siitä kai onkin kyse, missä mitassa. Nyt näyttää tältä (Guardianista):

Quote
Almost all European countries have recorded an increase in logging for energy. Nearly a quarter of the trees harvested in the EU in 2019 were for energy, up from 17% in 2000.

Biomass, of which wood from forests is the main source, now makes up almost 60% of the EU’s renewable energy supply, more than solar and wind combined, and a vast cross-borderindustry has emerged to meet this demand.

Kahdessa äskettäin näkemassäni kirjoituksessa on puhuttu puun käyttöä vastaan:

Selvitys: Ei puuta energiantuotantoon – rajalliset bioresurssit tulisi ohjata mahdollisimman pitkälle jalostettuun käyttöön

Energian kalleus edistää metsätuhoa Zimbabwessa – Halvan sähkön puutteessa turvaudutaan puuhiileen

Asia näyttää selvästi muuttuneen. Aiemmin fossiilisen energian korvaaminen puulla tuntui olevan aina "otollista". Syntiä oli vain, jos poltettiin ruoaksi kelpaavaa? Vrt. triidin alku.

MT jatkaa aiheesta. Energiakäyttö ei yksinkertaisesti kannata:

Selvitys: Vuonna 2050 biomassaa ei enää kannata juuri polttaa

Mutta tasaisesti tarjolla olevan energian tarve tietysti jatkuu:

Quote

Quote
Öljykasvien viljelyn lisäämisen myötä metsää on vuosikymmenen aikana kaadettu suunnilleen Alankomaiden kokoisen alueen verran, selviää tuoreesta raportista.

Kyseinen yhtälö on yhä ratkaisematta:

Puu palaa energiaksi kiihtyvällä tahdilla, mutta EU suitsinee intoa nopeasti – kattiloihin päätyvät enää harvennuspuut ja teollisuuden sivutuotteet

Sivujuonteena voinee mainita, että Sitran tuulivoimavisiossa puulla on hyvin tärkeä merkitys. Primäärienergiasta oletetaan biomassasta eli puusta saatavan yhtä paljon v. 2050 kuin nykyisinkin, ja silloin kaikesta lähes puolet.

Tarkemmassa analyysissa biopolttoaineprojektille voi käydä tällä tavalla:

Drax’s renewable energy plant is UK’s biggest CO2 emitter, analysis claims

Quote
A government-subsidised renewable energy plant run by Drax is the biggest single source of carbon dioxide in the UK, according to new analysis shared exclusively with Sky News.

Drax’s Yorkshire power plant receives multimillion pound subsidies for burning woody biomass pellets to generate renewable electricity.

New research by climate think tank Ember said the plant is among the biggest sources of carbon dioxide and PM10 (particulate matter of 10 micrometres and smaller) air pollution of all EU power stations – when biomass emissions are included – more even than some of Europe’s dirtiest coal plants.

Yet the emissions are not counted towards the UK’s total.

The UK excludes these biomass emissions from its total count, because – like the EU – it treats bioenergy as immediately carbon neutral on the assumption that forest regrowth soaks up the carbon again.
[..]
Critics point out that forests take decades to regrow and recapture all the carbon again, allowing warming emissions to accumulate in the atmosphere just when the world seeks to slash emissions by 2050.

In January the European Academies Sciences Advisory Council (EASAC) claimed that biomass technology is “not effective in mitigating climate change” and in February more than 500 scientists asked the EU to revoke biomass’s “carbon neutral” status.

“Regrowth takes time the world does not have to solve climate change,” the scientists wrote.

A 2018 study estimated it would take 40 to 100 years or more for forests to recapture the carbon emissions from burning the wood pellets, if ever, because forests are subject to hazards like disease and fires.

Tuo puunpoltto Britanniassa joutui sitten epäsuosioon, luultavasti em. tutkimuksen takia:

Drax dropped from index of green energy firms amid biomass doubts

Quote
Drax has been booted from an investment index of clean energy companies as doubts over the sustainability of its wood-burning power plant begin to mount within the financial sector.

The FTSE 100 energy giant, which has received billions in renewable energy subsidies for its biomass electricity, was axed from the index of the world’s greenest energy companies after S&P Global Dow Jones changed its methodology.

The exit from the S&P Global Clean Energy Index is a blow to Drax, which has vowed to become the world’s first “carbon-negative” energy company by the end of the decade.

Kyseessähän on firma, joka tuo valtavia määriä puuta Atlantin toiselta puolelta:

Quote
Drax sources about two-thirds of its biomass from the south-eastern states of the US via ocean tankers, which are major emitters, and recently struck a £420m deal to triple its biomass capacity by acquiring the Canadian wood pellet manufacturer Pinnacle Renewable Energy.

Tässä etsitään, löydetään ja ehdotetaan tuolle vaihtoehtoja:

Bensaa pahempaa:

U.S. Corn-Based Ethanol Worse For The Climate Than Gasoline, Study Finds

Quote
Our findings suggest that profound advances in technology and policy are still needed to achieve the intended environmental benefits of biofuel production and use.
[..]
These changes increased annual nationwide fertilizer use by 3 to 8%, increased water quality degradants by 3 to 5%, and caused enough domestic land use change emissions such that the carbon intensity of corn ethanol produced under the RFS is no less than gasoline and likely at least 24% higher. These tradeoffs must be weighed alongside the benefits of biofuels as decision-makers consider the future of renewable energy policies and the potential for fuels like corn ethanol to meet climate mitigation goals.

More biogas to reduce EU dependence on Russia? Remember that most biogas plants run primarily on maize, so there is a direct competition with food uses. A dangerous plan at a time of food price spikes and a looming international food security crisis.

Climate change: EU unveils plan to end reliance on Russian gas

Quote
To reduce reliance on natural gas from whatever source, the Commission is also calling for a huge ramp up in biogas, which is made from agricultural and food waste.
(lihav. HJ)
