Vahinko on jo tapahtunut:

‘Brussels Effect’: Europe’s CRISPR crop rules may have ‘costly’ international economic impacts

Quote
Many scientists and other stakeholder groups have requested a revision of the EU policies on GMOs. The EU Council of Ministers has recently started exploring the possibilities for a change. In addition, there is a legal possibility for clarifying the legal uncertainty resulting from the CJEU decision. Nevertheless, any change in policy—if possible at all—would take several years, given the highly controversial nature of the topic.

Epäselvästä tilanteesta huolimatta saksalaiset tutkijat yrittävät tätä:

Tyska forskare tar fram svampresistent vetesort

TEXT: Peter Karlberg

01. oktober, 2020

Europe approves imports of new GM herbicide-resistant soy, despite objections from Green Party, organic advocates

Sopii juuri perään. Ludger Wess uudelleentwiittasi
Matin Qaimin twiitin 3. lokak.

Eli viimeinen GMO on hyväksytty viljelykseen v. 1998.

Merkillinen on EU. Direktiivejä annetaan, mutta sitten jäsenvaltioille lupa tehdä, miten itse lystäävät:

Member states reserve right to ban pesticides authorised in EU, rules EU court

Post-Brexit UK likely to back crop gene editing, but won’t abandon EU’s strict GMO rules

Tällainen vauhti on USA:ssa jo saavutettu geenieditoitujen lajikkeiden hyväksymisessä:

Gene-edited crops approved by USDA jumps from 7 to 70 between 2019 and 2020

Selvää lienee kuinka EU:lle on nyt kilpailussa käymässä. Maailman suurin ulkoilmamaatalousmuseo siellä häämöttää.

Meidän täytyy sitten vaan repiä iloa siitä, että täällä tutkitaan kaikki hyvin, hyvin tarkasti. Se ainoa viljeltäväksi hyväksytty GMO-lajikekin tutkittiin komission pyynnöstä uudestaan:

EU’s only cultivated GM crop, insect-resistant Bt corn, poses no risk to humans or the environment, study finds

Näkökohta, yllättäväkin:

Viewpoint: Rush to develop COVID vaccine highlights failure of Europe’s GM crop regulations

Quote
In a recent article of mine published in the journal, Global Food Security, I highlight the EU’s reluctance to move away from its precaution-based regulatory system. Their reluctance to accept science is affecting not only in terms of the development of innovative crop varieties that will be better equipped to adapt to changing climates but also their ability to develop Covid-19 vaccines and have them approved.
[...]

This is where the EU has a real problem …. [V]irtually all of the Covid-19 vaccines being developed in the EU are based on technologies that will make them GM products. It presently takes the EU regulatory system nearly 5 years to make an approval decision just to allow a GM variety to be imported for use as animal feed.

It is very doubtful the EU public would be willing to wait until 2025 to have access to a Covid-19 vaccine. In an admission that the EU regulatory system is a failure, the European Parliament announced it would ‘derogate’ some of the regulatory requirements that would be required of gene-edited developed Covid-19 vaccines ….

Varovaisuuden kanssa täytyy olla varovainen.

Parikin juttua siitä, mitä EU:n politiikka asiassa vaikuttaa kehitysmaihin:

Tämäkin kulman kautta, vaikka tässä on ehkä kyse globaalimmasta ilmiöstä:

Jopa toivotaan nyt tätä:

Member states want commission to decide on the use of gene editing in animal and plant breeding

Quote
The ministers called for the use of “new innovative ingredients and techniques” to boost sustainable food production, as long as they are shown to be safe for humans, animals and the environment.

This was with reference to precision breeding using gene editing, which enables genetically modified organisms to be generated without introducing genes from other species. As things stand, the technology cannot be used in the EU, following a 2018 ruling by the European Court of Justice, which founds genome editing is subject to the 2001 EU directive banning genetically modified organisms.

Mutta jos vanhat merkit paikkansa pitävät, EU päätyy säädoksiin, joista jäsenmaat voivat poiketa esim. kaavoitukseen liittyvistä syistä!  8)

Tämän maatalousministerien yhteisen tahtotilan olimme jo tuolla toisaalla huomanneet. Saattaahan siinä jotain tapahtua. Ihan oikeestikin.

Mutta luomuväki se vaan jatkaa tämän vaatimista. Esimerkkinä Biodynaamisen Federaation uutinen:

EU Commission turning blind eye to new GMOs

Quote
On September 17, the Biodynamic Federation Demeter International e.V. joined 88 civil society and farmers organisations from across Europe in an open letter warning the EU Commission to turn a blind eye to new GMOs and demanding EU health and food safety Commissioner Stella Kyriakides to keep new GMOs regulated.

According to an EU Court of Justice ruling, the controversial new generation of food genetic engineering techniques should be subject to EU safety checks and consumer labelling but the European Commission is not implementing this ruling. The organisations ask the Commission to strengthen EU GMO policy, in particular as regards consumers’ right to know, freedom of choice for breeders, farmers and processors and the democratic scrutiny of EU GMO decisions.

Read the letter!

(Linkki osoittaa tuohon yhteiseen julkilausumaan, pdf.)

Vaikka vaatimus on juuri siltä taholta täysin kohtuuton.

Kansallisia luomujärjestöjäkin allekirjoittajina tuossa julkilausumassa on.

Viewpoint: How postmodernism birthed Europe’s anti-GMO movement

Tuohon asian filosofisiin taustoihin on ehkä syytä tarkemminkin palata. Se saattaisi ansaita oman triidinsä.

Italia ei tietysti ole tässä yksin:

Viewpoint: Italy’s GMO restrictions cripple efforts to expand sustainable farming.

Quote
The European Union continues approving import notices of new GMO products from overseas, this following another directive 2003/1829 [3]; all the while Member States persist with dishonorable hypocrisy of not approving cultivation [4], resulting in enormous economic losses for farmers. Unable to withstand the competition posed by GMO corn with higher yield and better quality, corn growers in the Northern Italian region known as Padania are forced to reduce the size of their own corn fields.

Tämä on siellä "muhinut" jo pitkään:

German Greens’ anti-GMO consensus may ‘shatter’ as 160 scientists urge party to endorse crop gene editing

German Greens compromise on support for CRISPR crops, remain ‘the party of precaution’

Ja tämä:

https://t.co/Lkk2e9KiGX?amp=1
