Pahalta näyttää:

‘Last and only hope’: With global banana crop under siege from fungal disease, CRISPR may be only remaining solution

Quote
Myydyimpien luomutuotteiden listalla banaanit jatkavat kärjessä edellisvuosien tapaan.

Ludger Wessin twiittisivulta:

https://twitter.com/LudgerWess/status/1397547004889292800

Experten warnen:

https://www.munich-startup.de/73037/29-millionen-euro-fuer-amsilk/

Eli geenitekniikan avulla aiotaan nyt tuottaa silkkiä. Ja kuvassa näkyvä uudentyyppinen (urheilu?)kenkä tulossa markkinoille.

Tällaista tavoitellaan:

‘Less water, fertilizer, pesticides and land’? How next-generation soy and corn seeds optimized with CRISPR and AI can increase crop yields while lowering our carbon footprint

Quote
Inari wants to engineer crops that require less water, fertilizer, pesticides and land. The company is focusing on soybeans and corn as its first crops because they require 300 million acres of land in North and South America to grow. Inari’s SEEDesign platform can increase soybean and corn yield by 20% while lowering water usage by 40% and reducing corn’s nitrogen needs by 40%.

Tuollaisten ominaisuuksien luulisi heti auttavan siinä, että tuo soija saisi vastuullisuussertifikaatin.

Edistystä on saavutettu geenieditoinnilla taudeille vastustuskykyisten sikojen kehittämisessä:

CRISPR bacon: Disease-resistant pigs could save pork producers billions of dollars annually

CRISPR offers hope for controlling African swine fever

Etelä-Afrikka ja tämä maissi:

South Africa has reaped major benefits from GM maize, study finds

Quote
Genetically modified (GM) maize has greatly improved food security in South Africa, reduced environmental damage and helped smallholder farmers achieve significant gains in earnings over the past two decades, a new study finds.

This marks South Africa as a success story in the cultivation of insect-resistant Bt white maize, given that it was the first GM subsistence crop producer in the world following its adoption of the cultivar in 2001-2002.

Afrikkalaiset tiedemiehet ovat ratkaiseet myöskin tämän ongelman:

African scientists have created a CRISPR-edited banana that’s resistant to a disease ravaging farms across the continent

A parasite is targeting bananas crops around the world — but African scientists are using CRISPR to stop it

Filippiineillä havaittiin muuntogeeninen munakoiso hyväksi asiaksi:

Philippines Approves Bt Eggplant for Direct Use as Food, Feed, or for Processing

Quote
07/23/2021, Manila, Philippines — After rigorous biosafety assessment pursuant to the DOST-DA-DENR-DOH-DILG Joint Department Circular (JDC) No. 1, Series of 2016, the Philippine Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI) has approved Bt eggplant event ‘EE-1’  for direct use as food, feed, or for processing (FFP) and issued Biosafety Permit No. 21-078FFP to the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB). Bt eggplant, locally called Bt talong, has been found to be as safe as a conventional eggplant, and can substitute for its traditional counterpart, according to the DA-BPI approval.

Bt eggplant contains a natural protein from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis which makes it resistant to eggplant fruit and shoot borer (EFSB), the most destructive pest of eggplant. The Bt protein affects EFSB worm only and is safe for humans, farm animals, and non-target insects. "Bt eggplant is safe as it only targets EFSB. It is safe for humans, animals, and non-target insects," explains Dr. Lourdes D. Taylo, study leader of the Bt eggplant project from UPLB.
[..]
The Philippines joins Bangladesh as the only two countries that have certified the safety of Bt eggplant. Bangladesh was the first country to plant Bt eggplant in 2014. From 2014 to 2019, a total of 91,270 smallholder farmers in Bangladesh have planted Bt eggplant.

Ohhoh!

Adding Human Gene Boosts Crop Yields by 50 Percent

Quote
Adding the human gene that produces the FTO enzyme to rice and potatoes boosts yields of those crops by 50 percent in field tests, report a team of researchers associated with the University of Chicago, Peking University, and Guizhou University. Their report in the journal Nature Biotechnology says the modified plants grew significantly larger, produced longer root systems, and were better able to tolerate drought stress. In humans, the FTO enzyme erases certain markers that regulate the production of proteins associated with cellular growth. In plants, the FTO enzyme similarly erases markers that inhibit their growth.

Tästä keksinnöstä on varmasti odotettavissa ISO HALOO.

They believe that the technique is universal and would boost the productivity and drought tolerance of not only most crops, but also trees, grasses, and more.

Baileyn kertomasta keksinnöstä toinen kuvaus:

RNA breakthrough creates crops that can grow 50% more potatoes, rice

Siinä ei sitten enää korostetakaan ko. geenin alkuperää. Mutta tieto satojen huimasta kasvusta on jäljellä. Kyllä geenin alkuperäkin kyllä mainitaan. Mutta ei korosteta sitä.

Hurjaa! Nyt Afrikassa on jo koeviljelmillä lähes saavutettu Iowan maissipeltojen satotaso:

Drought tolerant, disease resistant GMO corn that produces 3 times the yield of conventional or organic? It’s a reality in a Nigerian trial

Quote
Data from the third confined field trial of the TELA Maize project, that is being carried out at the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR) Samaru, has shown that the variety produces 9 tons per hectare as against three tons by the best producing maize variety in Nigeria.

The variety being tried in Nigeria by IAR is resistant to stem borers and fall army worm and is also drought tolerant. It was developed through an international collaboration coordinated by AATF with national agricultural research systems in Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda; the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) and Bayer Crop Science.
(lihav. HJ)

African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF)

Tuosta em. saavutuksesta twiitti omalla linkillään. GMOInfo_DE:

Rothamsted gets green light to trial gene-edited wheat

Quote
Researchers have used gene editing (GE) to develop a wheat with a reduced cancer-causing compound commonly found in toast.

The wheat has been edited to reduce levels of the naturally occurring amino acid, asparagine, which is converted to the carcinogenic processing contaminant, acrylamide, when bread is baked or toasted.

Acrylamide has been proven to cause cancer in rats and mice and it is a likely carcinogenic in humans.

The amount of acrylamide in bread is relatively low, but it increases many times over when bread is toasted.
