Kehotetaan panostamaan tähän:

Viewpoint: Plants are ‘carbon sequestration factories’. It’s time to capitalize on their natural ability to address climate change

Quote
Increasing the ability of a plant to photosynthesize increases yield or growth. This has already been proven in soybean research conducted in the United States where soybeans were genetically modified to have higher rates of photosynthesis. These varieties had higher plant biomass, ranging from 14 to 21 percent.

The discoveries from this research could have far-reaching impacts. The application of similar technology to other food crops beyond soybeans could increase yields of all the commonly consumed crops, fruits and vegetables. An increased yield could also mean that the genetically modified varieties may result in greater amounts of carbon sequestered.

Tämä kysymys on yhä auki:

Vaikka ohittaisimme tuossa varmasti kiistelyn kohteeksi tulevan geenitekniikan käytön, ihan sama tulee pohdittavaksi kuin edellä. Onko jollain valtiolla/toimijalla oikeutta ottaa pois hiilidioksidia ilmasta?

Carbon removal breakthrough: Genetic tools that have created climate resilient crops could capture carbon dioxide as well

Win-win-asetelmalta se tuossa saadaan kuulostamaan.

Vastaavanlainen läpmurto tämäkin:

Next generation biofuel: Genetically-modified duckweed can grow in wastewater, and it yields seven times more oil than soybeans

Tämähän kuitenkin on noissa tietyissä "piireissä" vallitseva näkemys:

Quote

The Dangers of Low Atmospheric CO2 Concentrations

Quote
Carbon dioxide is the building block of nature. It is the primary raw material utilized by plants during the process of photosynthesis to build and construct their tissues. Thus, CO2 literally is the “food” that sustains essentially all plants (and animals who consume plants, including humans) on the face of the Earth. And when that food supply is diminished, nature begins to diminish.

Niinpä on näinkin:

Quote
Consequently, any reduction in the CO2 content of the atmosphere will negatively impact the current state of nature, reducing not only the growth of plants, but other benefits brought about by higher CO2 concentrations, including greater water use efficiencies and the ability to better withstand environmental stresses such as drought, disease, high soil salinity, low light intensity, ozone pollution, heat waves, UV-B radiation, etc. Reducing these benefits would most certainly decrease global food supplies, potentially leading to civil unrest and conflict if the reduction is significant enough.

So, yes, there are consequences to reducing the air’s CO2 content by any amount. To claim otherwise or ignore this scientifically-based truth demonstrates the ignorance (and arrogance) of those hell-bent on reducing the CO2 concentration of the atmosphere.

Kuinka hurja tieto tässä kerrotaan, selvinnee lähiaikoina:

The Times of Israel kertoo siitä näin:

In possible climate breakthrough, Israel scientists engineer bacteria to eat CO₂

Quote
Decade-long research at Weizmann Institute could pave way for low-emissions production of carbon for use in biofuels, food, and help remove excess global warming CO₂ from air

Milloyn arvio:

The Net Zero Road to Nowhere

Quote
But “low-carbon fuels”—efficient biofuels—don’t exist. “Carbon removal technologies” aren’t possible to scale up, and if they were, it would cost about $1 quadrillion—a million billion dollars—at today’s prices to remove the 1.6 trillion tons of atmospheric carbon dioxide that U.S. climate envoy John Kerry said needs to be sucked “out of the atmosphere even after we get to net zero.”

Siis 1000 000 000 000 000 dollaria. Jokaista USA:n kansalaista kohti yli 3 miljoonaa dollaria.

CO2 Impacts on the Growth and Nitrogen Uptake of Wheat

Quote
Pooling their data for the three years, Lenka et al. report wheat plants experienced a "significant yield advantage and recovery of applied fertilizer N with CO2 elevation." In particular, as shown in the figure below, the approximate 130 ppm rise in atmospheric CO2 in the elevated CO2 treatments stimulated the aboveground biomass and grain yield by 12% and 15% respectively under ambient air temperature conditions and by a smaller 1% and 10% under elevated temperature conditions. The researchers also report elevated CO2 increased the total N uptake of the wheat plants by 16%, adding that "all [four] nitrogen use efficiency indices [examined] were significantly higher under elevated CO2 as compared to ambient." More specifically, elevated CO2 stimulated the agronomic efficiency, crop recovery efficiency, physiological efficiency and partial factor productivity of applied N by 43%, 39%, 28% and 15%, respectively, which improvements undoubtedly aided in achieving the biomass increases in the elevated CO2 treatments.

Finally, Lenka et al. report that "seed N concentration was significantly higher under ET and ECET treatments as compared to ambient," which finding indicates elevated CO2 had a positive influence on the nutritional quality of the wheat. Taken together, the results of this study represent good news for the future of wheat production as the air's CO2 content rises.

”Tavoite pysäyttää luontokato on jo vuodessa 2030.”
(lihav. HJ)

Luonnon kannalta CO2-pitoisuuden optimin on arvioitu olevan jossain 1000 ppm:n kieppeillä. Muistakaamme tämä. Ja arvioikaamme mielissämme, kuinka paljon luontokatoa on siten torjuttu.

Joka tapauksessa luontokadon pysäyttäminen on täysin eri asia.

Toinen.

The Many Benefits of
Atmospheric CO2 Enrichment
(pdf)

Noita täytyisi sitten miettiä, ennen kuin otsikon toimeen ryhdyttäsiin.

***

Mullistava keksintö: hiilidioksidia aletaan varastoida betoniin Hollolassa

Quote
Carbonaiden menetelmä perustuu hiilidioksidin kivettämiseen betonituotteisiin. Betonituotteiden hiilinegatiivinen jalanjälki saadaan aikaan yhdistämällä Carbonaide-teknologia vähäpäästöisiin sideaineisiin, joita tällä hetkellä saa teollisuuden sivuvirroista.

Carbonaide-menetelmällä valmistetun betonin laskennallinen hiilijalanjälki on –60 kiloa hiilidioksidia betonikuutiota kohden. Tavanomaisen betonin hiilijalanjälki on noin 250–300 kiloa hiilidioksidia kuutiota kohti.

The Practical Impossibility of Large-Scale Carbon Capture and Storage

Tulokset tähän mennessä:

Quote
CCS has been slow to take off due to the cost of capture and the limited salability of carbon dioxide as a product. Thirty-nine CCS facilities capture CO2 around the world today, totaling 45 million tons per year, or about one-tenth of one percent (0.1%) of industrial emissions produced globally. Of these, 20 reside in the US or Canada, six in Europe, and five in China. Twenty-four of these facilities use captured CO2 for enhanced oil recovery. Captured CO2 is injected into oil wells to boost oil output.

Kirjoittajan arvio (lihav. HJ):

Quote
The International Energy Agency calls for 9 percent of the world’s CO2 emissions to be captured and stored by 2050. Today we have a mix of 39 major and minor capture facilities in operation. The IEA estimates that 70 to 100 major capture facilities will need to come online each year until 2050 to achieve this goal. It’s unlikely that even 20 percent of the goal will be achieved, despite hundreds of billions of dollars in spending.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Carbon Dioxide

Quote
Political tunnel vision on global warming has resulted in declaring increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide an existential threat. But the United Nations’ resolve to reduce carbon dioxide levels runs counter to its goals to end world hunger, promote world peace and protect global ecosystems. It fails to address the key question relating to those three goals: Which pathway creates the greatest good to the greatest multitude—reducing or increasing CO2?

The numbers since the year 2000 provide convincing evidence that increasing carbon dioxide has positive impacts and reducing carbon emissions entails dire consequences.
