Tuo raportti keskittyi ympäristövaikutuksiin. Tässä se (näennäinen) paradoksi, että torjunta-aineen sieto ei lisääkään käyttömääriä:

The main technologies impacting on pesticide use have been crops modified to be tolerant to specific herbicides so as to facilitate improved weed control and crops resistant to a range of crop insect pests that otherwise damage crops or typically require the application of insecticides to control them.

Over the 24 year period examined to 2020, the widespread use of GM insect resistant and herbicide tolerant seed technology has reduced pesticide application by 748.6 million kg (−7.2%) of active ingredient and, as a result, decreased the environmental impact associated with insecticide and herbicide use on these crops (as measured by the indicator, the Environmental Impact Quotient (EIQ)) by a larger 17.3% between 1996 and 2020.

Tuo maissilajike hyväksyttiin lailliseksi. Sinappilajike sai armon sen siivellä.

Saldona voi siis sanoa, että intialaisten viljelijöiden kapinoinnilla oli tulosta. Kansalaistottelemattomuus on yhä eräs keino muuttaa asioiden tilaa. Ehkä onnistumisen yksi syy oli, että kapina tehtiin hyvin avoimesti ja julkisesti. Tiedemiesten tuellakin oli merkityksensä.

As soon as the government took the decision to release India’s first genetically-modified (GM) food crop — Dhara Mustard Hybrid-11 (DMH-11) — for “environment release”, some activists approached the Supreme Court to ban it for various reasons. The Supreme Court has ordered the status quo to be maintained till the next hearing on the matter on November 17. The opposition to GM food crops is not new.

Intialaisen vallan kolmijako-opin tulkinnan mukaan voidaan siis tuo myönteinen päätös vielä kumota korkeimmassa oikeudessa. Sitä GMO-vastustajat nyt yrittävät.

“They work in knee-deep water in the fields, bending the whole day and working,” Justice Nagarathna said.

Senior advocate Sanjay Parikh, for a petitioner, said the widespread use of herbicide-tolerant crops would encourage farmers to spray chemical weed-killers.

“The Supreme Court’s own Technical Expert Committee [TEC] had said that these GM crops were not meant for agriculture in the Indian context. They may be suitable in the western context where there are large farms, but not here,” Mr. Parikh argued.

Beware of activists touting "responsible research and innovation." The sensible-sounding slogan masks a reactionary agenda.

No sensible person could favor irresponsible research and innovation. So RRI—"responsible research and innovation"—may sound like an innocuous idea. As it takes hold in Europe, though, the term has clearly become a cover for what amounts to a Luddites' veto. Now the notion is percolating among American academics. If it finds its way to the halls of state, RRI would dramatically slow technological progress and perhaps even bring it to a grinding halt.
