Näiden violettien tomaattien markkinoille tuloa on jouduttu todella kauan odottamaan:

Purple tomatoes? Superfood genetically engineered tomato rich in antioxidants nearing United States rollout

Quote
The purple tomato was created by Cathie Martin at the John Innes Centre in the UK. In 2008, her team reported that mice whose diet was supplemented with purple tomato powder lived nearly 30 per cent longer than those on a standard diet or a diet supplemented with powder from normal tomatoes.

“A 30 per cent longer lifespan is incredible,” she said during the presentation, though of course the results of animal studies don’t necessarily apply to people.

There are already tomato varieties with purple skins, but the genetically modified purple tomatoes have purple flesh as well. They contain around 10 times more anthocyanins, which are antioxidant pigments.
(lihav. HJ)

Mainio tuote, kerrassaan.

Tai nenä. Hyväntuoksuista durraa. Mutta tuoksu on olennainen osa makukokemusta.

Amerikassa tämäntyyppiset tuotteet saattavat muuttaa suhtautumista entistä myönteisemmäksi:

Rethinking anti-GMO sentiment: Antioxidant-filled ‘super tomatoes’ could reset public hesitation

Viranomaisten suhtautuminen siellä on jo myönteistä:

Tässäkin on kuvituskuvana hyvin tummanvärinen tomaattilajike:

Nyt on aika kylvää tomaatit – lajikkeita löytyy joka makuun

Mutta huomatkaa: se ei ole tuo erityisen terveellinen GMO-lajike!

Tämä edellä jonkun kerran mainittu idea edistyy ilmeisesti edelleen:

Increasing yields without genetic modification? A bio-spray that silences plant genes is in the works

Ja oikeastaan aiheuttaa sekin vaikeuksia yrityksessä säilyttää luomuviljelyn "puhtaus'. Sikäli kuinka tuon ymmärrän, minkäänlaista jälkeä ei jää lopputuotteeseen (?). Mutta luultavasti se silti yritetään luomussa kieltää. Kuten geenieditointi.

Naturessa laajahko artikkeli geenieditoinnista, jossa näkökulma on siinä, miten se hyödyttää pienviljelijöitä kehitysmaissa:

Genome-edited crops for improved food security of smallholder farmers

Quote
One of the main advantages of using genome editing is that it can accelerate the delivery of improved varieties to smallholder farmers. Genes can be edited directly in elite breeding lines or commercial varieties6,7, eliminating the need for backcrossing — a technique used in conventional plant breeding to introgress a trait from a non-elite or wild relative ‘trait donor’. This reduces the time needed to develop an improved variety by nearly two-thirds and eliminates linkage drag caused by non-elite residual genes from the donor parent, which are impossible to eliminate by conventional backcross breeding.

While not a panacea, genome-editing technologies are widely accessible and could help democratize the benefits of science.[..]

Tekijöiden joukossa vanha tuttumme Robert L. Paarlberg. Artikkeli on ehkä liian pitkä referoitavaksi yksityiskohtaisesti, mutta tästä yhteenvetokuvasta saa ymmärryksen siitä, missä köyhän kansan viljelylajeissa on tähän mennessä tuossa tuloksia saavutettu:

Argentiinan oma GMO-maissi:

Sustainable GM farming innovation: How Argentina’s drought-tolerant genetically-engineered wheat reduces greenhouse gas emissions and increases yields

Quote
In October 2020, Argentina approved the world’s first genetically engineered wheat for cultivation and consumption. Production expanded dramatically in 2021, and will continue to expand in 2022, after Argentina received regulatory approval in late 2021 for exports to Brazil, a major consumer of Argentina’s wheat.

The lessons from Argentina’s experience are important as other countries decide whether they want to follow suit. Argentina’s genetically engineered, drought-tolerant wheat — named HB4 — could have large environmental benefits, but other countries’ choices will determine their scale.

Samasta maasta on kyse, jossa nk. "aktivisteilla" oli n. vuosina 2013-2016 laajamittainen aktio kaikkea muuntogeenistä viljelyä vastaan.

Ei ehkä ehdi auttaa nykyisessä akuutissa kriisissä:

Egypt’ agriculture scientists at Atomic Energy Authority produces new strain of wheat resistant to salinity, water scarcity

Quote
CAIRO -30 April 2022: The Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority, headed by Dr. Amr El-Hajj, announced that the agricultural research scientists in the authority have started harvesting the production of new strain of genetically-modified wheat at the authority's site in Inshas city, Bilbeis, Sharqia Governorate.

This strain has high-productivity with distinct characteristics such as  being resistant to cultivation in saline lands, and water shortage, the authority said in a statement on Friday.

The rate of production exceeds 4 tons per acre, with an increase of almost a ton over the currently cultivated Egyptian varieties, the statement said, adding that this variety cultivation takes only 140 days, the statement continued.

El Hajj said that the cultivation of this strain could contribute to increasing Egypt’s local production of wheat by 33 percent and consequently would decrease the imported wheat.

Mutta jatkossa varmasti.

Tuo ei putkahtanut tyhjästä. Egyptillä oli jo vuosia sitten muuntogeenisen vehnän tutkimus- ja kehitysohjelma (muistaakseni tuossakin mainittu suolankestävyys yhtenä pääkohteenaan). Silloin se jäi eri syistä kesken. Tai, kuten tuo uutinen osoittaa, väistyi vähän taka-alalle. Mutta kehittäjät ovat ilmeisesti hiljaisuudessa jatkaneet puurtamistaan.

(11.05.22) Tämä uutisen versio on pessimistisempi:

Salt-proof, drought-tolerant wheat developed in Egypt — but GMO ban remains in place

Kelpasi myös näille maille:

Australia, New Zealand approve sale and use of Argentine GMO wheat

Quote
BUENOS AIRES, May 6 (Reuters) - Australia and New Zealand have approved the sale and use of foods that contain so-called HB4 wheat, a genetically modified (GMO) variety developed by Argentine firm Bioceres to withstand droughts and herbicides, the firm said on Friday.

Argentina, one of the world's largest wheat exporters, was the first country to approve GMO wheat in 2020, followed by Brazil in 2021, a trend that could continue if global supply is further constrained by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Perusteluja sille, miksi tämän geenimuunneltu lohi on hyvä juttu:

Viewpoint: Do we really need GM fish? The case for growing (and eating) AquaBounty’s biotech, fast-growing salmon

Osin samojakin:

How genetically-engineered salmon could help preserve wild populations — if it isn’t blocked by anti-GMO activist groups

Quote
We argue here that using gene editing to create genetic barriers between farmed and wild aquatic animals is emerging as the most effective approach to preserving aquatic genetic diversity. As such, it merits the strong support of the conservation community.

Alkuperäiseen:

Biotechnology can help us save the genetic heritage of salmon and other aquatic species

GM insect-resistant corn up for approval in Kenya could help fight devastating aflatoxin poisonings
