Yllättäväkin tieto. Lehmikarja ei ollutkaan uhka tämän alueen villieläimille:
Cattle may pose little threat to iconic wildlife in Kenya parkNAIROBI, KENYA—Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve (MMNR) is home to some of the most iconic wildlife on the planet. From July to October, millions of wildebeests, zebras, and other animals migrate to the park from the Serengeti in search of pasture, a massive journey known as the Great Migration. The resulting scene is a spectacle like no other, drawing throngs of tourists to watch a multitude of wildebeests cross the Mara River. Maasai herders, from whose lands the reserve was carved, are prohibited from bringing their cattle to the reserve because the domestic animals are thought to take precious forage away from wild migrants. Still, some Maasai do it anyway to ensure their cattle survive the long dry season.
A study published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests laws excluding these herders are based on a faulty premise. Researchers found that sites in the reserve where cattle had grazed had roughly as many large herbivores and similar vegetation as sites without cattle, suggesting low numbers of cattle can coexist with the wild grazers.
Kuitenkin siis: kunhan karjan määrässä pysyttiin kohtuudessa.
Sarjaani naudan (ja naudalihan) puolesta,
En osaa sanoa, onko tuo tulos yleistettävissä Etelä-Amerikan cerrado-tasangoille.
