Nobelistin varoitus tai vetoomus:

Nobel laureate Sir Richard Roberts: Uganda will remain trapped by food poverty if its leaders bow to anti-biotech activists

Quote
Unfortunately, opponents like ActionAid Uganda have ignored our call and have continued their well-financed campaigns to sow fear and distrust about this beneficial technology, flooding the radio with ridiculously false claims that GMOs will cause cancer and make African men infertile. One wonders if the primary backers of Action Aid and other NGOs, which include the European Union, the British Government, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and the Ford Foundation, are aware of this unethical – and I would say immoral – propaganda campaign.

Tämä ei näytä juurikaan muuttuneen:

Kenyan Farmer: On Cusp of a Biotech Revolution, Africa Faces Resistance from Europe and Anti-GMO Activists

Quote
Highlights:
* Kenya and much of Africa have been denied the tools of modern crop technology available in more industrialized countries mostly because of political opposition, often linked to European activists
* GMOs developed or in the pipeline to contain diseases like armyworm and climate change related challenges such as drought and flooding, but are stalled

SAKSAN KEHITYSMINISTERI: MARKKINAT AUKI AFRIKKALAISILLE TUOTTEILLE

Quote
[Saksan kehitysministeri, Baijerin kristillissosiaalista unionia (CSU) edustava Gerd Müller ehdottaa EU:in markkinoiden avaamista afrikkalaisille tuotteille maastamuuttopaineiden helpottamiseksi.

Why Ugandan banana breeders say it’s critical to add genetic engineering to their toolbox

Quote
Ugandan researchers have been successful at developing robust hybrid bananas through conventional breeding techniques. Yet they see a strong need to adopt GM varieties of the fruit that is so critical to the nation.

They argue that using conventional breeding to develop hybrid cooking bananas is a tedious affair, taking more than half a dozen years to get them ready for market. And while the conventional hybrids offer the promise of high yields, they lack the critical pest and disease resistance offered by GM bananas.

Tässä perustellaan vielä lisää:

Quote
Genetic engineering offers the opportunity to build in resistance to a particular disease, while leaving other characteristics of the plant intact. In the case of the cooking banana, for example, the taste would not be altered. But that ability to introduce disease or pest resistance offers a major advantage over conventionally bred crops. That why the hybrid bananas, while offering a improved yields, remain susceptible to banana bacterial wilt.

Kummassakin tapauksessa.

Nigerialainen kehittämiskeskus paheksuu ja protestoi kansainvälisten NGO:oiden geenitekniikan vastaista kampanjaa:

Nigerian officials warn anti-GMO groups to end campaigns against biotech crops

Quote
Speaking to The Guardian, Dr. Rose Gidado of the NABDA, said some well-funded non-governmental organizations were funding the activists to raise false claims that GMOs cause cancer and infertility. She cited Home of Mother Earth Foundation, among those campaigning against GMO crops; Greenpeace, which is against golden rice that is fortified with vitamin A, and Action Aid, which is campaigning against genetically modified banana.

Ugandan researchers hit the road to battle anti-GMO propaganda

Vastapuolen tukena on USA:laisia ja eurooppalaisia tahoja, ja kulman kautta jopa Euroopan Unioni:

Quote
Opposition to GMOs in Uganda involves various local groups with strong ties and funding from European and US groups.

Among the leading opponents inside the nation is ActionAid Uganda, which is responsible for a series of radio advertisements claiming that eating GMOs will cause cancer. The organization’s 2016 annual report offers details on a project contract worth millions of dollars. Funds were collected from a range of organization, including the World Bank, European Commission, UN Women, UN Habitat, UN Human Rights, the Netherlands Embassy, DANIDA, Ford Foundation and the Berkeley Trust. The money was meant for humanitarian purposes. ActionAid also receives support from its international offices in the EU, UK, Netherlands and the US.

Quote
The organization’s relationship with ActionAid UK has created some controversy surrounding how its money is being spent, with the UK unit saying it does not financially support opposition to the biotech law:

ActionAid UK is concerned about reports in the press relating to our involvement in a debate in Uganda about the health effects of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). It is not ActionAid’s policy to take a position on the health impacts of GMOs because health related research is highly contested and we do not have the necessary expertise to make informed decisions.

Usko tuota sitten.

Tällainen takaisku Tansaniassa:

Why did Tanzania just pull the plug on its GMO crop trials

Paarlbergiin, josta mekin tämän keskusteluosiomme aloitimme, palataan:

Quote
The influence of the anti-GMO, anti-technologically progressive agriculture of Western, especially European environmental NGOs is out-sized throughout Africa.

In his 2009 book Starved for Science, Robert Paarlberg lays out the case that “rich country attitudes” – a fetishization of naturalness resulting in a preference for organic and peasant farming and an opposition to industrial farming in particular and biotech in ag in particular – are transmitted to Africa via the European based NGOs headquartered in African cities. Also coming into play are attitudes absorbed during the European university of educations of many African urban elites. Paarlberg sees this as a fundamentally neo-colonial dynamic.

Young Ugandan biotech advocates push back against scare tactics of European and American-funded anti-GMO African environmental activists

Quote
However, Jonan believe advocating for biotechnology does not come without challenges. Among the biggest of those is the need to overcome the scare tactics employed by anti-GMO activists.

“Some regions in Uganda have been exposed to negative messages that discourage farmers from adopting biotechnology, we may receive hostility from such regions. Limited resources may also hinder our awareness creation activities at the grassroots and yet farmers remain key in creating a great environment for adoption,” Jonan said.

Nigeria poised to become Africa's GMO superpower, overcoming NGO scare campaigns

Ja Nigeria teki sen:

Nigeria approves its first GMO food crop

Quote
Cowpea is an important source of protein for millions of Nigerians and others in West Africa. Farmers typically apply pesticides six or seven times within a planting season in an attempt to control the destructive pod borer (Maruca vitrata) pest. The GM cowpea, which provides built-in resistance to the insect, will significantly decrease pesticide use, researchers said.

Ilmeisesti tuo toteutettiin BT-tekniikalla.

Quote
Prof. Alex Akpa, acting director general of the National Agricultural Biotechnology Development Agency, said that with the approval, Nigeria “has registered her name among the global scientific community as a country capable of finding solutions to her challenges.”

Siinäs sen kuulitte, te tietyt MEP:it, Euroopassa.
