A tasty purple GMO tomato with higher nutrients and longer shelf life? What could go wrong?

Sitten ehdotus tai ainakin vihje siitä, mikä pieleen voisi mennä:

Nathan Pumplin, president and CEO of Norfolk Healthy Produce, the US arm of Norfolk Plant Sciences that will commercialize the product, is very aware that a large segment of consumers may reject the purple tomato. But he’s hoping to connect with those who are more open to eating them. He says the company plans to first introduce their purple tomato at farmers markets. “It’s a place where growers get to directly interact with consumers, and consumers can ask: ‘What is this new vegetable? How was it grown? Where did it come from?’”

Tuo on sen verran hyvä tuote, että varmasti geenimuuntelua vastustava väki tekee kaikkensa ylläpitääkseen olemassa olevaa kuluttajien epäluuloa. Ja sitä levittääkseen ja vahvistaakseen.

Mutta voisimmeko mekin tehdä jotakin? Esimerkiksi tehdä ehdotuksen käyttämäämme kauppaan, että haluaisimme valikoimaan noita violetteja tomaatteja?

USAssa violetti, tavanomaista terveellisempi muuntogeeninen tomaatti sai myyntiluvan. Antosyaanipitoisuus (kuten mustikassa) on korkea, siitä väri ja terveellisyys. Antosyaanit ovat flavonoideja ja osa antioksidantteja. #gmo

Eli olisi kehitetty GMO-hiiva, jonka avulla voitaisiin tehdä maitoa kuten olutta. Siis täysin ilman lehmiä.

Ja oluen kanssa sitten näin. Herättääkö seuraava innostusta, syntyykö kysyntää? Vaikea sanoa, mutta tämä olisi kuitenkin mahdollista:

If the Non-GMO Project truly cared about the opinions of poor farmers, they'd wholeheartedly endorse the technology these growers want to use. But that won't happen. The project's lucrative business model hinges on the myth that biotech crops are uniquely harmful. Because they value their ill-gotten profits over food sovereignty, they will continue to lie to the public. Shame on them.

Eivätkä näkymät siellä vallan huonoja olekaan:

So where does this leave Australia? Are Australian consumers open to the idea of a GMO purple tomato? Either imported from overseas or as seeds for their backyard?

[Professor Christopher] Preston says although we can’t know for sure, there are some signs that consumers would be open to it.

“I think what’s happened is it’s become a lot more familiar to people,” says Preston. “We started growing GM canola in Australia and the sky didn’t fall in.”

Last year, the New South Wales government lifted an 18 year moratorium on GM crops, meaning that every Australian state but Tasmania now allows the growth of genetically modified plants. South Australia lifted the ban the year before.

Voitaisiin siis ryhtyä kasvattamaan Australiassakin. Kuten tiedämme, EU:ssa systeemi on kovasti kaksivaiheinen. Tuon lajikkeen tuonti onnistuu helpommin. Mutta viljelylupa on tehty peräti vaikeaksi. Täällä siitä millaisena direktiivi Suomessa hyväksyttiin. Minun pyöristykseni:

Eli täälläkin halutaan voimaan oikeus kieltää GMO-lajikkeet mistä tahansa syystä. Kunhan siinä ei vedota turvallisuuteen. Muistio yrittää kuitenkin luoda kuvaa, että ennen oli niin, ettei perusteluja tarvittu, mutta jatkossa tarvitaan.
