Se tuottaa Garcían käyttöön noin neljä kuutiometriä biokaasua päivässä. Lisäksi biokompostori tuottaa kasvimaan lannoitteeksi sopivaa jätevettä.
– Pelkästään hyvän lannoitteen saaminen teki biokompostorin rakentamisesta vaivan arvoista. Taloustilanteen vuoksi on hyvin vaikea tuoda maahan lannoitteita, mutta biotuotteilla voi paikata tätä puutetta. Joissain tapauksissa ne toimivat myös tuholaismyrkkyinä, García selittää.
Alexis García, 62, on entinen yliopiston professori, joka on eläkepäivinään yhdessä vaimonsa Iris Mejíasin kanssa omistautunut maanviljelylle. Heillä on Sierra Maestrassa, Havannan eteläpuolella maata, jonka luonnonmukaisesti kasvatetut antimet ovat tehneet heistä omavaraisia.
