Miksi GM on hyvä asia?

Borlaugin toive tai unelma tämän kasvitaudin torjumisesta näyttää vihdoinkin olevan toteutumassa:

Vehnää vaivaa maailmassa 3 ruostetautia. Yhtä vastaan niistä kyetään nyt kehittämään torjuntakeino geenitekniikan avulla:

Tuo tauti ei ollut se, josta Norman Borlaug erityisesti viimeisinä vuosinaan varoitteli, eli Ug99. Mutta eiköhän senkin vuoro vielä tule. Se on varsin todennäköistä jo siltäkin pohjalta, että vehnän koko perimä on nyttemmin selvitetty. Sekin oli vuosikymmenten urakka, mutta katsottiin valmistuneeksi elokuussa  2018  eli viime kuussa, parisen viikkoa sitten.

Argentina, one of the world's largest wheat exporters, was the first country to approve GMO wheat in 2020, followed by Brazil in 2021, a trend that could continue if global supply is further constrained by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Näistä ajoista tuntuu olevan kauan. Mutta nyt siis ihan varmasti ainakin yksi muuntogeeninen vehnälajike on saanut myyntiluvan.

More than 70% of consumers in Brazil would not have any restrictions related to consumption of transgenic wheat, according to a survey seen by Reuters that is changing companies’ perception about whether to sell GMO wheat in Brazil.

The survey breaks a paradigm in Brazil under which consumers in the South American country would be against consuming genetically modified (GMO) wheat after its recent approval in Argentina.

Siitä viimeistään selviää, miten ylivoimaisin satotason nousu saavutetaan muuntogeenisillä lajikkeilla.

Siitä myös selviää, että satotasoja voi muutoinkin nostaa. Toisaalta tiedämme, että Afrikka - jonne "vihreä vallankumous" ei ulottunut – on pääosin jäänyt junnaamaan 1960-luvun satotasoihin.

‘Smart plants’: The next generation of crops will have genetic on-off switches

Scientists at Stanford University think they may have a solution: genetic circuits that can turn the dial on specific genes to control the root growth of plants, paving the way to developing “smart plants” that can respond to climate chafnge. The team tested out these new circuits by applying them to tobacco leaves and arabidopsis plants, and published the results [August 11] in the journal Science.

Jotenkin kummallinen on tämän kalan tapaus:

Kysehän ei ole geenimuunnellusta kalasta. Päinvastoin kuin Aqua Bountyn kohdalla. Mutta yhtä kaikki. Kampanjaan sitä vastaan kuulu disinformaatio, että se olisi. Molempia viljellään altaissakin, se on niille yhteistä.

Ja niin on, että suomeksikin netistä löytyy siitä pahan puhumista.

Mutta on itse asiassa myös geenimuuntelun hyödyntämisessä lupaava tapaus. Kalan kerrotaan olevan kaikkiruokainen. Niinpä sille varmaankin kelpaa ruoaksi geenimuunneltu ruistankio tai rapsi. Ja näin siitä itsestään tulee hyvin terveellistä ruokaa!

Suomessa tilapia ei ole kovin tunnettu (vaimoni ei ollut kuullutkaan siitä). Mutta Afrikassa se on suosittu. Koska kala on jo huomattu sopivaksi allasviljelyyn, sisämaan valtioiden kalahuoltoon siellä se on juuri passeli. On kuulema hyvääkin, väittää GLP:n artikkelin kirjoittaja.
